F4U-1A Landing bay color

Hello,

Just a quick question. I’m currently working on Tamiya F4U-1A Corsair and I’m building the “Ole 122”.

Tamiya’s instruction call for painting the inside of the wheel bay with interior green. From all the documentation I have on the corsair I can’t figure out if it is interior green or white?

Any help would be appriciated.

Not sure if it applies to the 1-A models or not, but I seem to recall reading that some of the earl;y models were a “salmon” or pink color on the inside. Offhand, can’t remember where I read it, maybe it wasn’t the Corsair . . . darn those pain meds! [:^)]

It was the Corsair. There has been a lot of debate about gear bay interiors on many different aircraft. But recently there was a discussion about the Corsair. There are many different opinions and as many directives quoted from “DOD” files. When the aircraft was produced, where, what manufacturer, what branch it served, and then of course how it was maintained, all fuel the debate. Interestingly, a Corsair was pulled from Lake Michigan last fall. It was an early “Birdcage”. It has salmon colored gear bays. It is undergoing restoration work at Pensacola. So, my advice is to do your research on the particular aircraft. That kind of detail will be hard to nail down. Then do your best to get the most accurate match. Then paint with confidence and don’t second guess yourself. Lastly call out to Hans Von Hammer!!! He can always come up with great research articles. HEY HANS! Rick

Rick,

Thank you for the answer. I love doing research about airplanes it is almost as fun as modelling. If Hans or anybody else have some specific info about the “ole 122” it would be appreciated.

The only thing I got is the famous picture during WW2 in the tricolor scheme and as well as a picture once back in the U.S. at Vought factory with a Gloss Navy Blue scheme and a bit different marking.
The only text I could find is just that it’s the only decorated airplane with over 100 mission.

Also I was wondering what is the nose cone color on the 122 (tri color scheme) Taniya put it red but I’, not sure it’s accurate either.

Once again any info on the 122 would be welcome.
