I’m planninng to build a Wildcat flown by Butch O’Hare. Hobby Boss has a selection of them.Which one should I build? Are there decals available for the O’Hare aircraft?
What scale? Hobby Boss makes a F4F-4 in 72nd that’s billed as a F4F-3, but you’ll need to make some mods. They also make the F4F in 48th, but I’m not familiar with its details.
Butch O’Hare’s most famous mount is F4F-3 / BuNo 4031 / F-15 which he flew the day he shot down 5 Bettys and earned the MoH. Link here of a build of his aircraft: http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/us/cleaverf4f3.htm
If you want the F4F-3 he flew to be an accurate subject, you’ll need to do some homework regarding the wing and cowl because not all kits get it right, which is why so much aftermarket is available.

I have that kit in my stash and it does include decals for O’Hare’s # F-15 BTW (it’s noted incorrectly in the kit instructions).
