I have to disagree with you there. The AIM-54 Phoenix had a range of over 100 miles. The AIM-120 AMRAAM has a range of around 30 miles. That is the same range of the latest model of the AIM-7. The advantage of the AIM-120 is it is a fire and forget missile in its terminal phase where the AIM-7 had to be guided all the way to impact.
I’m sorry but that is simply not correct:
Here are the datas:
AIM-120A/B: 50-80 km (30-50 miles)
AIM-120C-5: 105 km (65 miles)
AIM-120D: 165 km (102 miles)
As you can see the “D” version of the AMRAAM is pretty close to the range of the PHOENIX and this is only the official data. I would not be surprised if it is possible to “pimp” the AMRAAM even a little bit more in the next future to bring it up to a standard which equals if not suceeds the Phoenix. We have to keep in mind the Phoenix is 1960-70’s technology!

Hieronymus, you need to stop bringing FACTS into a religious debate. [;)]
So it was only Owen Wilson that flew it in Behind Enemy Lines, and he’s not as hot as Tom Cruise WAS… oh, good analogy!
Hey roguepink 2
What do you mean, with a religious debate? I really like the F-14 and I think it was by far the meanest thing around for quite a long time but it still is a Jet and IDONTLIKEJETSATALL!![censored]
There is only one fighter which deserves to be in the Hall of fame: Vought F4U Corsair, the U-bird. whistling death, Marine’s dream, the one and only, and nothing comes close to it, nothing at all!
So let’s get rid of all those Hornets, Eagles, F-16 and so on, lets cancel the F-35 and the F-22 and spend all that money for a couple of brandnew Corsairs!!! [oX)]
Just try to imagine what this would mean. A Corsair would have been MUCH cheaper than any current Jet. Instead of a few dozens the Navy would be able to buy a few thousand! All aircraft buffs around the planet would love to see them, hell they would even pay for seeing them…ok maybe I’m nuts but Man I would love to see something like that!

Yeah, you may be nuts. That’s right up there with the next generation of home computer should be an abacus. As for the “religious debate”, all too often people in this sort of debate (F-14 vs. F-18, Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Mac vs. PC… people are taking a matter of emotional appeal and trying to convince others that, on some measurable level, one is quatifiably better than another.
I happen to have an F-14 AND an F/A-18 in my collection. I use a Mac, but I’m equally comfortable on a PC. And, for what its worth, I prefer Doctor Who over Star Trek and Star Wars.
Yes, the F-4U was a GREAT plane. But how can you not put the P-51 in that Hall of Fame?
Yes, the F-4U was a GREAT plane. But how can you not put the P-51 in that Hall of Fame?
Because some people here seem to think the F-14 and/or the F-18 does not belong to it either, just kidding, the Corsair is my personal favourite aircraft, the Flying Bulls here in Salzburg have one and I can see and hear it every time they fly it, what a great looking aircraft! and because I have build sofar 13 different versions of it, and still a few more to go! The Mustang certainly belongs to this Hall of fame as well as quite a few other aircraft.
Oh and I prefer neither Star Wars nor Star Trek as the best science fiction, for me the best of them all was and still is, “The Muppets Show-Pigs in Space”

HA! Muppets! Did you ever see “Muppets From Space”? It was very funny.
This is as far off topic now as this silly old argument deserves.
