F-86D: "early" vs. "late" differences?

I’ve got the 1/48 Revell AG “early” kit, and some neat decals for a “late” version. I’m wondering how easy it would be to turn this into the latter. So far all I’ve come up with is the brakes on the wheels.

All help is appreciated.

Charles,

The “early” jet came before the “late” jet. [:-^]

OMG! I sounded like Wing_Nut there! [:O]

Seriously- I do not know the difference, sorry! Hopefully someone here does know.

LOL [(-D]

Boy did I leave myself open for that!!!

You sure did! [swg]

There were some optional vent / intake parts that are affixed to the rear from the inside.

I don’t recall if these parts are what differentiates the early / late versions though.

Hmmm a little before my time. My wife got me a present that may have an answer. I got about 2 boxes of old books that she caught someone throwing out. As far as I can tell they belonged to some Marine Aviator that retired and went to work for Nasa. I will look and see because the time period seems right. You know one mans trash another mans treasure.[:I]

Exactly what I was going to say when I saw the title [(-D]

Nice to know great minds think alike huh Frank[:-^]

Yep, and ours too! [(-D]

Yeah, that’s it, the early ones came first and had plenty of wurms!

Charles, the answer as I know you expect is slightly more complicated, but just having the parachute housing on the tail takes care of the main difference. The airplane was subject to a whole long list of modifications, most done at major overhaul facilities or the factory, and of course the final result was the F-86L, which most D’s were converted to. I have two of Steve Ginter’s books on the D/K/L Sabres, Air Force Legends 202 by Ray Wagner and 207, by Duncan Curtis. They pretty much tell the whole bloody story. I can’t remeber it all, and photos of the aiplane you are modeling is the only safe way anyway. Or else depend on the other guy not knowing any more than we do.

What a find, Aaron! Bonus points for the wife!

Let me know if you find anything.

Thanks, John. I guess I am looking for the outer appearance differences, which may just be the parachute housing. I’d like to take my “early” kit and make the “late” model, using the decals I have. I’ll do a little more focused research on the parachute housing, as well as trying to find pictures of the bird on the decal sheet. I appreciate you pointing me int he right direction, though.
