F 86 Wing paint Question

Hello could some one tell me the proper paint color for the center part of the F 86 wing Ive done mine in alunimun finish but want to paint what I believe is the fuel tank that seems to be a gray of some sort as seen in this pic, I want to use testors model masters or sim,Thanks In advance

The inspar area on the F-86 was a duller, darker aluminum as it left the factory. A different alloy was used compared to the rest of the wing. greyish metallic aluminum is the best I can describe it.

John is correct. What paint are you using? If you ust Tallon, you could use a differant powder to make the differant shade and use Alum.pait with Alum. or steel powder for the rest of wing area. My …Harv

Yup, and it weathered differently, but it’s plainly seen. I did mine as a mix of light grey w/aluminum:

Beautiful Dog.

Why thankya! Yeah, that Alclad man, it’s great stuff!

Alclad?? Even more [bow]

I had it in as foil.

Must be “polished Aluminum”?

What is your technique, A to Z?

You are quite correct, it is Polished Aluminum. Ya know, I often hear of problems peoplehave with Alclad, they’re never sure what to undercoat it with. Often it’s thought that all the Alclad shades use gloss black as an undercoat. This just isn’t the case. Only the polished shades (Polished Alum, Chrome, and Stainless Steel) use a gloss black undercoat. The rest use a primer, like Tamiya or Krylon. Read the bottle, it’ll tell you which undercoat is needed. So for this one, I used the Alclad gloss black basecoat. There are two key components to getting it super polished looking. One, the gloss black must be very glossy, so apply at least twocoats to make sure it’s very glossy. Second, the paint has to be very cured. If it’s not, it tends to mix with the undercoat, and give you a less than ploished look. So undercoat with black, make it glossy, and let it cure. Then the Alclad is misted on very lightly. Using 10-15 psi, and holding the airbrush 6-10 inches away. You let the Alclad lay itself onto the surface, rather than blasting it on. Another two coats is about all you need. Again, let this cure completely. I got a little impatient on this Dog and when I masked off the panels, the tape pulled up some aluminum. But not a lot, and not in patches, ust some dust off the top. But this was ok, because itgave it that used look which I always like on a jet. A clean airplane isn’t what I go for. Airplanes get dirty and used, and shouldbe modeled as such [:D]
