F-4 seats

A picture of the kit seat, I believe a true details seat, and an old VLS seat. Since I prefer closed canopies, I will use the VLS seats on a build that I keep the canopy open.

I post on my phone, and haven’t figured out how to post multiple picts in one post yet. Sorry.

The kit seats appear to be a bit lacking in detail. Not cool for such a pricey kit.

That’s what gets me about kit seats. 5 or 6 parts each to build them, and you can’t get belts.

I do agree that there isn’t much detail, but I’ve never been impressed by any kit seat. I like the look of molded belts more than PE ones, but I’m sure I’m a minority opinion on that.

I also like the resin seats over the added pe details. The one in the right looks magnificent. If its a tad too high just sand the bottom on the seat to lower the profile.

There is another option, which is masking tape belts with PE buckles. Tape can be easily painted, and can be formed into better looking curves and bends. Also, if you want a belt logo visible, you can find pictures of the belts from mfgs, usually showing the belt material, and print it on paper. While you need to color the back, I can usually find a marker with the proper color for the back.

Don, that sounds good. I may need to try that.

I really like the old VLS resin seats. Just put two in my F-4J I wrapped up. Great detail.

I agree that kit seats are basically at the edge of being useless and resin seats are not to be beaten for look and scale detail

However here in South Africa they are not as readly available and have to be ordered from overseas making them rather expensive

I had to learn to dress up the kit seats with lead foil and in the case of my 1/48 Academy F4b I used tamiya tape for the belts.

on my 1/32 Hawk I used epoxy putty to make the seats more “buky” and again used tape for belts

On my 1/48 F15 I used tissue paper mixed with PVA glue on the seat to look like a wrinkled seat cover

These will never compare to a resin AM seat but with a little effort you can make something that will look a little better than the stock kit seat.

Those look great - especially stuffed in a cockpit. I really like the tissue paper idea. Great stuff friend!
