I would like to add a 1/48 F-4 Phantom to my collection, but I would like to do something other than a grey paint scheme. Something adveserial or cammo of some kind. Anyone seen any good paint schemes that would stand out from all the grey fighters on my shelf?

Hi Jake. you could try an Isreali F4E. the ones with the shark mouth look great. or a Royal Navy F4K. i will post some links or pics if i can find them.

Jake, the F-4 is my favorite aircraft ever. GOOD CHOICE. The F-4’s in USAF service wore many different coats of paint. Three schemes that come to mind are the SEA scheme that had Light Gray (36622) underneath with Dark Tan (30219) Dark. Green (34079) and Medium Green (34102). The second scheme you can do is the Wraparound scheme, it is essentially the same as the SEA scheme but without the light gray underneath. Then the third variation of that scheme is the European One scheme which replaces the Dark Tan with a very Dark Gray (36081).
Several foriegn countries used the SEA scheme as well, Australia, Turkey, and I think one or two more. Check out some of Japans and Germany’s as well as Iranian F-4’s the Israel suggestion above is also a very good choice. Good Luck.
Remember between the USN, USMC and USAF there were over ten variants of the F-4. So there is plenty to choose from.
I’ve seen a picture of a completely red F-4 once. It was a QF-4n of the Naval Missile Center at Point Mugu. It certainly wasn’t dull and gray!

pity that the 1/48 scale kit of it has been OOP for many years now.
If Israeli Phantoms are for you, check out the Israeli Air Force Website. This is the official site of the IAF and has some really groovy shots of F-4’s. Click on ‘Gallery’ and then on ‘Plane Gallery’. Then scroll over to the right until you see ‘Phantom’. There’s 12 photos.
You can also check out The Israeli Air Force - IDF/AF. This is a non official site which has alotta images of various IAF aircraft. There’s at least 21 F-4 images on this site, (including several of RF-4E’s) although several of them are either REALLY small or bad quality or both. But there are some keepers. Just scroll down to ‘The Gallery’ and then down to all the F-4 stuff. There’s also some other interesting stuff on this site, just grunge around.
There’s more out there, just do an image search on Google or whatever search engine you like and look for Israeli F-4, F-4 Israel etc. Mix up the search terms and see what you get.

blackwolf you make me want to build a modern a/c. dont know where you get all the photos but i would love to thumb through them. i bet you have enough several model clubs could build one per person per month and they would not build all the a/c represented. awesome.

The RAF 111 sqn had a gloss black F-4 with squadron thunderbolts down both sides that I think hasegawa brought out in 48th as a limited edition. Alternatively, in the Israeli line Isra decals do some colourful decals in 48th for their latest and most advanced Phantom, the F-4 Kurnass. If memory serves the Kurnass in model form is an F-4E with minor mods, the actual jet has Israeli electronics. Isra Decals are on the web. I typed in Israeli Air Force for another project and,happily, found more than I expected or needed.
aeroflight.co.uk has a great deal of background info on Israeli units etc but the Phantom imagery was not on my list at the time, sorry. I did find the official IAF page surprisingly frank in showing F-15 images, maybe it`s the same for Phantoms.

Yes I have a HUGE collection of images. I usually grab stuff off the net when I see it. I also save the URL’s to an organized system of database files in case I need to go back to a site. It’s a much more flexible system than saving faves on your internet browser and, besides, I found out real quick that AOL’s favorites storage has a limit of 2500 addresses. LMAO
Anyhoo, I draw all this stuff that I post from either images I find on the net, stuff I’ve scanned, (30,000+ images on the hard drive now) or from my hardcopy library or my files.
Over the last twenty years I’ve managed to amass a sizable collection of books, rags and original photographs. The books sometimes get scanned then sold, and the rags either get scanned or clipped and sold/tossed. At one point I had fifty zerox boxes full of rags and it got to be a bit much, so that’s why I decided to cut 'em up or scan 'em then ditch 'em.
And if I don’t have it on the drive or on the shelves or in the cabinets, I’ve become quite familiar with much of what’s available on the net and usually know where to go to get info/images. And if I don’t know off the top of my head, I just Google it.

Jim, which site are you talking about? The official IAF site? It does load slowly sometimes, even with a cable connection.
As to the images I posted above, they came from various sources. Despite the database system I mentioned, I don’t always keep careful track of where I grab stuff from. If I see it and like it, I grab it. If it’s a site that has alotta stuff, I’ll save the URL. But if it’s a single page with a few images I usually don’t bother.
So I dunno where most of those came from off the top of my head. But if memory serves, some of the USN (the NMC & VX-4 jets) came from the Boeing website. Not totally sure on that though…
