F-14A ready for launch.

Aaaaaagh! Most Monogram kits are junk I think, and the F-14 is no exception. I spent 3 months on this(mostly filling seams). I love the F-14 though, almost as cool as the Raptor. This 1/48 F-14A fought me every step. But I guess I am grateful, for I have learned a lot. I wanted a cool F-14 scheme so I bought this:

Thanks for looking, and if you see anything wrong, please tell me[:)]

Nicely done. Looks like your hard work really paid off.[t$t]

Overall a decent effort. I know the Monogram Tomcat is an older kit and requires more attention to get nice results, like their other teen series kits of the same vintage.

Two things stand out: the ejector marks on the lower surfaces of the stabilators, and the big step on the radome from the pitot tube. Both could be solved by some sanding and shaping prior to painting. A little more TLC will get your next Monogram “challenge” looking better.

Thanks Jetmodeler,

and thanks Skit. I have another Monogram F-14, so I will use your advice.

Honestly my photos are terrible, I think the model looks much better in real life(maybe not).

I will try to take some better pics later.

Looks good to me. Nice job on it. I always liked those markings for VF-84. I am working on one right now and I have to agree about the work to get it looking like you did. But for the money it is hard to complain.

Blasphemy!

Thanks Mkelly

Paintsniffer, I know their F-15E is great.

raptor,

I remember that kit as a total bear, so I understand your seam filling comment.

I’m currently going through a Tomcat project myself. I’m on my 4th 1/72 F-14. Doing so many, in a bunch, gets you noticing things as you continue studying the bird.

Did you intend to leave the wingtip and vertical stablizer formation and anti-smash lights unpainted?

The decals were wierd, I don’t think they came with them except the front nose lights. I will probably put them on if I ever get some.

Very nice work,my favorite markings VF-84 I still hope that someday Tamiya will do justice to a 1/48 Tomcat

Nicely done! Never been a Revell or Monogram fan, pro-modler either, but if you choose you can find some that meet the big boys in any respect and for less coin, the F-15E mentioned I have 6 [:$] bought 1 saw a completed one at a IPMs meeting and got a deal if I got 6 that seem to sit at my local store! strange after so many were impressed by the build at IPMS.

Anyway the debate over Revell will continue and I guess as long as each is happy then hey it’s a great hobby, and BTW also got Resin CP and etch so if I get there I’m going to do these six up and no excuse for lack of detail.

I also loath Airfix [N] but I better be quiet don’t want to ruffle to many tail feathers, no pun intended.

Andrew- How did I miss this one? Best Tomcat markings ever IMHO, good choice! Color looks good, and overall a nice looking build! I good panel line wash would really bring out the detail, especially on the flying surfaces. Realy a great build!

She looks good to me, Andrew! Actually, while I do like the VF-84 markings (Who doesn’t??), my favorite markings actually have to be for VF-111 The Sundowners. Oh well.

Your Tomcat turned out looking good to me. I kind of have to agree with you that the picture quality could have been a lot better. Also, no weapons?!?!?! What gives??? F-14 simply must have tons of Phoenixes (Phoeni?), Sparrows and Sidewinders hanging off them before they truly start to look like a Tomcat. [:D]

Eric

PS. For the record, Monogram kits are FAR from junk. You haven’t built junk until you’ve put some High Planes or Unicraft kits together!

Eric

Nice looking Kitty Cat. I have built several of them as well. The only problem I find fault with is the Boat Tail which is for an early F-14A. Also on the ones I have built it was a PITA getting the main gear doors to fit correctly.

FWIW, I also like the looks of VF-111 aircraft. There is something about the sun burst that just set them apart from other units.

Nice one Andrew. The Jolly Rogers markings are my fav.

Regards, Rick

Nice Kitty… [:)]

Funnily enough, back around 1986/87, when everyone was putting out kits with VF-84 markings, Monogram pushed this one out with VF-111 markings. I have one somewhere, but the decals are badly out of register. The guys at the store got me a replacement sheet but they were just as bad. [:XX]

Wow thanks everyone! I would agree that the Sundowners look pretty cool.

Nice Job!! I have always loved this Jolly Rogers tomcat ever sense I watched the move The FInal Countdown
