Current project is the hasegawa 1/72 F-14 Atlantic Fleet Squadrons. Started on it today and got to work on the venderlin resin cockpit, never used any resin parts before I have to admit they are quite nice, especially when compared to the kit parts. Here is my progress from the first day, nothing glued together yet just dry fit as there is quite a bit of touch up to do, But that is for another night. I gotta get to bed, you would not believe how angry the wife is that I disappeared into my models for 6 hours today…whoops, I really gotta set an egg timer or something so I dont lose track of time. as always comments and critisisms hoped for
It’ll be awhile before that issue settles down, I can assure you. Put yourself in her sandals and think abt it, and the answer will present itself. I bought a lot of books and sat w/ the kid and did a lot of reading. Think of all the threads where people say “returning to the hobby after 20 years…” and they are 45. Oh sorry, don’t head for the bridge.
But… the secret to a good marriage is the 1/1/1 rule: one night you do your thing, one night she does her thing and one night you do your thing together and no, not that but the thing she really wants which is you go out to your backyard with a couple of in-n-outs and listen.
As another voice of experience (including the present), take care of the family first, and work on the models into the wee hours of the morning. You’ve probably already realized that you’ll never win an argument, so don’t even let it go there…especially since her pre-birth hormones are working their way back to her “normal” state. If she see’s you’re doing your part, modeling won’t become an issue. And give her time to get away a few times a week to do “her thing”. I’ve got three boys now and so she doesn’t feel guilty about leaving me to watch them all, I just tell her it’s “Boys night out” for us (even though we don’t go anywhere). That’s my apporach anyways, and I’m still enjoying models without the 20 year lapse. Just don’t expect to build at the same pace you did before!
My wife still gets testy if I spend too much time in the model shop or guitar studio or woodshop or whatever. The key is moderation and fairness in all things. The earlier statement about hormones is spot on as well, and I am sure that the Mrs. feels bad about her aanger on reflection as well. Make sure that family time is first and foremost, the hobby is secondary, and the rewards will pile up for you!
She was mad but it passed quickly, she understands that I havent worked on a project since the baby was born and I work hard and have been looking forward to this build. Even being upset she still was happy with my progress and smiled when she woke me up this morning so I dont imagine too much damage was done. Its all about balance I may have gotten a little too tied up with my project yesterday but today I will spend time with her. Everybody except rj seemed to miss the point of this post though…what does everybody think of the progress
, looks good to me! Im a newbie, will be awhile till I tackle resin… good detail on such small scale (I see the penny!). maybe take pics at a higher angle to decrese light reflection from table?
Just rememeber to sand resin outside, you dont want resin particles in the air with a baby around… and dont worry, 20 years later (like my situation), kid leaves for college and then you have another empty room to use for display purposes and can finish those 1:48 bombers
Hey how did you know ive got a half done 1/48 b-17?? or is that one of those things everybody has. I know about the resin and toxic materials, we all just had a big coversation on that subject the other day, in fact I think the thread is still on the front page. The main problem with the pics isnt so much the reflection but the lack of detail in the camera. I will get some better pictures later
I knew about the b17 from a post in the Revell GB; yes, I am still working on getting good pics of that P51D WIP. I just saw the resin post, added a waaay too long response there!
Oh man I have not set foot in that revell gb in forever, kindof ashamed of myself on that b-17 but i just do not have the drive or the stregth to finish that beast
Hey LP, hows it goin? hows your son? hope your all doin well! I’m doin the same kit mines vf102 diamondbbacks… wanna race…lol… you’ll propably win my plastic keeps shattering when I put glue on it I cant geta new one and I’ve decided to see this one through to the end. good luck keep us posted, i’ll try to do the same, nice start…mark
I touched up some area’s and used green tinted future for the screens, Im quite pleased with the results. Still have some work to do before moving on but making progress slowly but surely
Very nice work on the pit. Hope you did some dry fitting to be sure it will fit inside the fuselage. I haven’t used the Verlinden set, but the Aires set took a ton of surgery to get in.
I have done some dry fitting, but the instructions are not very clear about how its supposed to sit, and I dont have all the parts for the part of the fusalage out so weather it really fits or not remains to be seen.
The little guy is doing awesome, I dont think I wanna race. Its been 2 and a half weeks and I have only gotten this much done. apparently this kit is gonna take a little longer than expected
I don’t know about “everybody”, but I know I’ve got one that is waiting 'til the kids move out and I get my own “modeling” room. Silly wife - she thinks it’s gonna be her sewing room. . . Maybe it’ll have to be “our” hobby room or something like that.
Oh yeah - cokcpit looks good to me. How you guys can paint dials and switches in 1/72nd scale amazes me. Even if I could see that well, how do you keep your hands steady enough for that?
My hands shake badly, the key is to hold the peice in one hand and the brush (or sharpend toothpick in this case) in the other. Then they shake at the same frequency
