I have an M4 Sherman and I was wondering how the external storage and bags were held on. It just looks like its floating in some pictures. Was there some type of bar or cable that the backpacks were attached to or what?
They were tied on to handholds, put in wooden boxes … really, any way they could be stowed that neither interferred with the transit or aiming of the gun, or inhibited the crew entering and exiting the machine. There was also a lot of consideration of whether stuff would get snagged passing through forests, brambles, tight streets …
But generally, they were tied down to SOMETHING!

The straps on the packs are strips of plastic from a toothpaste tube. The bar they’re hanging from is two bent staples
Don’t mind the tracks on the tank they’ve been changed (rookie mistake)
