exhaust color for B-17G

Hey guys…I know that if I need soemthing answered you guys are the ones to know it.

I am just about done with a B-17G…(pictures to follow soon) the only thing left is the decals and the exhaust pipes. The instructions say washed out tan for the exhaust pipes but there is no way that is right.
I have seen P-38 exhasusts (on top of body). They look just like the B-17g and there is no way they are washed out tan.
I am thinking it looks more bronze/rust mix.
anyone have any ideas?

I painted mine with MM rust and weathered with pastels. Seemed to have turned out okay for me. Just my $.02.

I use MM rust and while its wet,I add a light brushing of steel to get a go effect. Also for the exhaust trails I dry brush a MM medium gray, the rust dry brush on top and last but not least a dry brushing of MM flat black on top. This makes in my opinion the best looking exhaust trails.Digger

I paint exhausts with MM Burnt Iron, Dry brush with Vallejo Flat Brown, Finish it off with a wash of Citadel Rust Brown Ink. You can see the end result in my P-51B sig pic.

After a few hours of flight most aircraft exhaust systems (including the B-17) turn a rusty color - As far as the color of the exhaust fume stains, they can vary widely from aircraft to aircraft - from almost white (mixture too lean) to totally black (Mixture too rich). If the mixture is too lean, you are risking burning up the valves and/or pistons. If the mixture is too rich, your fuel consumption goes up and the plugs foul. What the mechanic tries to do is to adjust the mixture so that when the mixture control is in auto lean during cruise, the resulting stains are somewhere mid way between the white and the black.

I first paint mine a silver color (enamal) then wait 24 hours. I then take Tamiya redbrown (acrylic) in a very wet slury and wash it over the silver in 2 coats drying time in between wait 12 hours and dry brush silver for details

I painted mine with Testors brown mix with a little silver to lighten it and give a metallic touch.

Hmmm… i was about to ask the same question! Good replies, guys! I think i’ll try woodbeck’s method since i have lots of tamiya paint. nkm, where did you get testors paint?

I’m going to take pictures at lunch today, if it isn’t raining, and they aren’t flying. Of a B-17G. Just got back. The exhaust look dark rust, burnt metal, gun metal and maybe bronze. there was also some yellow, don’t know if that came from the cowl bands. The vanes on the super charger looked international orange. I should have pictures to post by aug. 30.

As always, when the supplies I need is not available at the LHS, from my brother who is living in NY. Many thanks to him. He is also a modeler.
