ever went without painting

Has any one ever went without painting a model and just using the color of the plastic for most of the color needed? I have a 190 and it is already grey and i think i will just paint the cowel and rudder yellow and not waste the grey since its already there! Of course will detail it . also what is a good wash to paint over it to pick up the lines in it black thinned very well? or what?

Nope. Bare plastic looks like, well, bare plastic. You would do better to paint it IMHO.

I agree with Rick. I’ve been tempted a few times, but it just never looks right. If you’re going to invest the time and effort in making one look good cutting a corner there isn’t the way to go IMO.

No. I wouldn’t do that. It won’t look very nice. a) the grey is most likely the wrong shade.
b) bare plastic looks too much like bare plastic. c) IME (from early modeling days) decals don’t like bare plastic at all. d) luftwaffe (if it is a luft plane) camo was more complicated than just one shade of grey, usually with darker greys/greens and mottling. e) I don’t think an oil wash will do well with bare plastic. f) if you’re planning on doing any weathering ie with pastel chalks or so on, it won’t work on bare plastic.

If you do have an airbrush definitely paint it. I hope this helps.

I built an Academy F4U-4D Corsair without painting it. The color of blue was wrong (little tooo light), but close enough that one could argue it was for scale effect. With a flat coat finish it ended up looking ok.

Still, wish I had painted it. Thus why I’ve got another Corsair kit in my stash to replace the experiment.

Paint the 190. And buy the paint from your local hobby store. Fuel the economy.

Yes i have an airbrush! it was just a question ?

yes I would agree with everyone else. paint it. I have too many bad memories of my 10 year old days when I thought shiny grey plastic looked like the flat gray on an F-4 Phantom…[:p]

Good luck with the build!! Be sure to post pictures when you are finished.

Yup, have to agree with what was said before: paint it.

Try it on a piee of spare plastic and you will see quiet a difference between the painted and unpainted area.

This is not an issue for me as I prime all my kits and so far they are not doing primers in camo colours. [;)]

Flightplan,
When I was a kid, I never painted my models - and they were really just toys, not serious attempts at creating a scale replica.
As has been said before, bare plastic looks like - well - bare plastic.
You might give it a try and finish the model and try to put on the decals, but in the end, you’ll probably be disappointed with the result.
Sacle Modelling, and using the tools of the trade (airbrush, paints, putties, primers, aftermarket resin and PE) is really a skill that must be practiced again and again to “get it right”.
If you DO paint your 190, you’ll probably find that the end result would be better than if you hadn’t. Good luck mate.
