Once again, the new guy needs some help! I was building a 1941 Willy’s hot rod, and was airbrushing the main body. I did the top half gloss black, and bottom half gloss red. The first problem I had with this is masking the half that I wasn’t painting. Any tips there? I ended up using tape, and when I pulled it off, some of the paint came with it. That was my first time airbrushing an actual project part. Any tips? Thanks!

There’s a ton of different ways to mask. I’ve used anything from regular invisible tape to notebook paper, to stencils. The best thing that I’ve found to be “gentle” on the paint has been a name brand invisible tape–like 3M, and not the generic brand of invisible tape, as they not only can pull the panit, but also leave the glue behind on the model.
Another thing is to let the masked paint thoroughly dry before applying anything to it.

I forgot to mention this, there’s an article in last months Fine Scale Modeler where a guy used Silly Putty as a mask. It was used on armor, but I’m sure there are other applications that this technique can be applied to!

There is some new painting tape out, not sure of the name, that looks like masking tape but it is blue. It is very low tack, reportedly doesn’t pull off paint, and is affordable. I have never used it, but my friend says it is the best tape he has found. I have used damp newspaper as a mask with no paint lifting.

I used silly putty on my Chevell to do strips and it worked great. The only problem is cutting the silly putty in straight strips.
