Is there a plastic scale model of an Evarts Class destroyer escort? I’ve seen several other classes but never the Evarts class. I know of a Captains class resin model but I’m interested in plastic. My grandfather served on an Evarts class in WWII and I’d love to build of model of his ship.
As a new member here I stumbled upon your post while “catching up” on this forum. I also wanted an Evarts class DE to model a specific prototype and while I have since stumbled upon a resin 1:350th offering (you mentioned finding a Captains class, is it the attached image below?) I have already started ‘bashing’ one from the Trumpeter 1:350th USS England (a Buckley class) DE-635 (Item #05305).
Armed with Squadron/Signals book on Destroyer Escorts and the NavSource website I’ve undertaken replicating the ship I want that’s not yet offered directly by the plastic kit makers. It’s still in progress but as a project it is quite ‘doable’ if you’re comfortable with minor scratchbuilding techniques. Mine is slated to sail under Admiralty colors, Penant K476.[4:-)]
The Squadron book (Warships Number 11/ item 4011) outlines the evolution from the ‘short hull’ Evarts class to the ‘long hull’ Buckley and subsequent classes. Whack approximately 16.5 scale feet from the hull, modify the bridge some and then scratch the remaining superstructure. Hmmmm, you’ve reminded me that my project is gathering dust- whoops.
Lindberg produced an Evarts-class DE in about 1/300 - but given the quality of most of the Lindberg ship range (I haven’t seen this one out of the box, but I have a lot of other Lindberg kits) it’d probably be easier to kitbash one from the Trumpeter USS England (if you can’t afford the ISW resin kit) If you want a larger-scale model, you could try the Revell 1/240 USS Buckley, though this is also an old kit requiring a lot of work.
My apologies - I’m always getting the US WW2 DEs confused as they are so similar! Also thanks for the info on the Lindberg kit’s quality; if it’s re-released by Hawk I’ll keep a look out for it.
I do know that Lindberg produced two DE kits, one 1/300 and the other in about 1/550-600, which is much cruder than the larger one. (if you buy a second hand kit on eBay or similar it’s a good idea to ask the seller what size it is, as the 2 kits had similar boxes and often did not show the scale or size)
