Engine colors for a Fw190D

Hello!
I’m building the Tamiya Fw190D with the corrected wheel wells, using the beautiful little resin kit from Model Design Construction. I’m working on the rear portion of the Jumo engine, visible with all it’s wiring when looking up into the fuselage through the wheel wells. What should the predominant engine color be? I’m thinking either going with Gunmetal or using XtraColor’s “Oily Steel”, a great color which looks just like, well, oily steel (it seems appropriate!). What would be best? Also, how might I weather/discolor the engine to make it look worn and heat exposed–any suggestions? Thanks. I know the inside of the actual wheel wells should be RLM 02.

While the Fw 190D-9 used a Jumo 213A engine, it is very similar, in many resopects, to the Jumo 213E-1.
Here are some pics of the one in my 1/48 Dragon Ta 152H-1:

The inside of the wheel wells could also be unpainted metal or RLM 76. The insides of the gear doors could be RLM 02 or 76.

Hope this helps !

Beautiful job, especially on the engine! Did you use Moskit exhausts?

The visible engine in the resin kit probably represents less than 25% of the whole engine, the lower aft portion. I’m thinking Oily Steel and Exhaust Black might be good to go with for the engine. It is a considerably more detailed version than the “engine plug” made by “Parts are Parts”, which can also be used in correcting the wheel wells. I’m thinking a nice burnt umber oil wash, or perhaps a light wash of Tamiya Smoke acrylic might also be good…what do you think?

Good info…I’ll soon be doing the same thing. Thanks for the heads up.

id go with oily steel, where did you get your engine plug?
