Hi, I want to know if it’s okay to coat an clear enamel coat over Tamiya or Gunze acrylics.
I want to paint with acrylics since it’s easier to change colors and less clean up. But I want to coat it with enamel clear coat so the finish will be durable. (this will be a project I will keep with me for life). Is it safe to do so?
Two guys at my hobby shop said the enamel will eat away the acrylics…
What are my options?
Thanks.
If the acrylic is well cured there should be no problemo. Consider using Future for your clear coat. Future drys rock hard and will protect any finish you are trying to preserve plus you will have the added bonus of using a totally compatible acrylic clear coat over your acrylic finish.[:)][:)]

added: if you need a flat finish get a flat acrylic clear coat and mix a SMALL amount with the future to make a dead flat coat.
I have always clear caoted with enamel over acrylic, trick is to make sure the acrylic is fully and completely cured, no less then 48 hour… no less. You said for something you will keep for the rest of your life… make sure you give it 48 hous or you wont have something good.
Thanks.
So as long as I keep the acrylic well cured. It should be no problem to coat it with enamel.
WELL cured is the operative phrase. I’d leave it at least 24 hours.
