Ejection seat pulls

I know this has been asked before. In fact, I think it was me. In any case, I can’t remember.

How do you guys paint the yellow and black pulls for ejection seats?

Thanks.

I paint the handle a solid yellow first, then I paint the black ‘barber pole’ stripes individually. Just my [2c]
Hope this helps!

[#ditto]and if you have some sort of magnification, you really pack’em on.[:D]

Uh, given my (utter lack of) talent in this area, praise the Lord for color Eduard parts. They even remember to add the red attachment part where appropriate, as on the F-4 and later F-8 seats.

I paint them yellow, and wait for that to dry. Then I take a fine point black pen, the kind with the small plastic tip, not a felt tip or sharpie or anything like that, the name of this exact type of tip escapes me just now for some reason, and carefully just draw them on. It works pretty nicely, and leaves a nice, black black, not a green black or red black or blue black the way markers and sharpies can leave. It’s simple and looks good.

Hmm…well, every pen I’ve tried won’t stick to the paint. Well, it won’t dry.

I usually do solid yellow, then black stripes. I will have to try that marker pen idea. Thanks, Madda.

I’ve used the technique that Madda mentions and I was very happy with the results in 1/72 scale. [:D]

Regards,

I paint the yellow, let it dry and then paint the black with a very fine brush. It works for me in 72:nd scale (the only scale I use).

I’ve twisted yellow and black thread together and pulled it through a drop of
white glue to stiffen it. Two one foot pieces of thread will supply many ejection
seat pulls.

I’ve found the closest thing to the perfect paint pen I’ve seen so far: It’s called Deco Color Opaque Paint Marker, but in fact it’s a ballpoint and comes in various colors. It’s perfect for cockpit nobs, switches and the stripes on the ejection seat and on pull handles on the instrument panel. Get them at the local art or craft supply store.
Does anyone remember those dreadful things Tamiya put out (or still does, for all I know). They were worthless to me, and expensive to boot.

Yeah Bones,

Unfortunately since in 1/48 scale anyway…the parts are so small, I find the best way to paint those ejection handles is by hand…Yellow first the the little black stripes…You need a steady hand and a small brush with nice bristles…use the black paint sparingly and touch up when necessary…It’s a time consuming process…a good pair of tweezers might be necessary to hold the part while painting.

Good luck with that,

I’ve had good luck with the paint and pen method on my 1/48 ejection seats. I use a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point marker. A Sharpie will write on just about any kind of surface.
