Hey guys, I am considering displaying a USS Constitution in front of a window. Even with the shades down summer temperatures will probably reach 115 degrees. How would heat effect ship rigging? I appreciate any thoughts on this!
Hoo, boy. I would not recommend displaying your Connie (or any model) in a window. The UV light will affect your model in a bunch of ways, not the least of which will be bleaching the color. Heat is going to be another factor, especially when it changes from day to night. Shrinking and expanding of joints, effects on glue, deterioration of joins. I can’t speak directly to whether prolonged direct sunlight will cause rigging sag, but will definitely bleach it, and the heat change could cause your masts to warp, which will effect your rigging.
Can I ask why you want to display your model in the window?
Hey Tim. thanks for your response. I do not want to put it in the window; my dear wife has restricted every place else. Actually it would be behind a shade, no direct sun. After thinking it through, it is Bad idea.
Shipwreck, I know how you feel about not being allowed to display your builds in your home. My models are on display in my basement work shop.
