Eduard WWI kits... are they as good as they look?

Hello all

It seems to be a good day for Armor guys to venture into your realm, so here goes. About me, I hadn’t touched a model in 20 years till last Christmas; now the bug has bitten. I have done a couple Sci Fi kits, and a few Armor kits (both WWII and modern). I never thought I would want to do another aircraft till I saw this months TMMI (Tamiya Model Mag.)

The Pfalz D.IIIa from Eduard built by Kevin Kuster is a thing of beauty. While my skills are not quite up to that level yet, we can never grow without a challenge. I realized that these aircraft have a more direct tie to ‘Knights in Shining Armor’ then any Armored Cav. It wasn’t until this week, that I realized that was a motivating factor for me.

I see now that Eduard has several kits of WWI airframes, the armor models I have done either came with Photo-etch (Dragon) or had a ready available set from the same manufacture (Tamiya). So I have absolutely no experience with Eduard on any level.

I have spent enough time (and money) on this hobby this past year to quickly learn that you generally get what you pay for, so $35 - $ 45 for a kit that already has fun bits (photo-etch , superior decals, etc…) is expected. This brings me to my original question… Are the Eduard kits really as good as they look in their adverts ??

Thank you

Shane

Yes, especially the newer releases.

Regards, Rick

In a word Yes… They are the class of kit companys now. Their clean molds, Details and decals plus instructions etc are first class. I put them ahead of Tamiya.

Wow, ahead of Tamiya… I may have to check Eduard kits out.

Thats a bold statement.

In this case, it’s the truth.

My main interest is WW2 A/C and Ships. My friend bought Eduards Mirage IIIc, I have to admit that even though it’s not my prefered subject matter that kit has to be the best quater scale kit out there… I bought one just to have the kit…

What this company does to improve their line is amazing. They have retooled most of their earlier kits ( which weren’t too bad to begin with) and have gotten better with each new kit… I sound like a Eduard salesman but the facts are the facts, I say keep it up

all the more so since i haven’t seen any tamiya wwi a/c in any scale,
while eduard has them in both 1/48 & 1/72… by virtue of a ‘no-show’,
eduard wins hands down, lol !
the eduard wwi a/c i have built in 1/72 r excellent kits, w/ very good decal
sheets… profipack versions have extra decals, masks 4 painting & usually
a sheet of p/e parts included. eduard’s releases from now on will all b in
profipack style. well worth the asking price IMHO…

Welcome to the Aircraft Forum Shane. Enjoy your stay!

I think that the Eduard kits are some of the finest kits out there. The build really nice and when you add some of the details available you have a very nice kit.

Cheers,

Eric

Now, mind you, Roden kits are also excellant and can give eduard a run for thier money. Thier decals are horrible, but the plastic and the castings are comparable.

Thank you all

I have been out of town, or I would have responded sooner. Looks like I might be joining the Aircraft Forum after all.

Thanks again
