I just finished this Dora for Mustang’s 190 group build about a week ago. I wanted to post it up here just so everyone gets a chance to see it. Kit decals were used along with Ultracast wheels and resin exhaust and intake. The prop is resin from Fusion because Eduard’s props are a bit off and ugly on the sprue. This is the only other known D-13 scheme besides the more infamous Yellow 10. Here’s the rare pic from the Japo Book:
the camo on the nose and engine cowling is speculative. Colors are 81/82 with light gray primer (RLM77) on the wing tops.
Thanks Gary. Without a large, thick wing, your tire size is pretty limited. Just imagine landing and taking off in a 109. That landing gear was deadly!
and just as much to the experienced veteran pilots of the 109’s. I’ve read too many stories about it. Might have just as well been landing on unicycle landing gear!!!

Joe- I’ve read many stories too about pilots training in the 109. Heinze Knoke wrote how he witnessed his friend being the first one in their group to take it around the patch, only to stall it out on final and spin it into the ground. He ran over to the pilot laying on the ground, all mangled, screaming, and still barely alive. He then said the instructor yelled at the remaing pilots in the group and said, well, who’s next? Imagine being the next one in line to try after that?
once again, Nathan, gorgeous. Are those HGW seat belts I see, or etched? They look very natural. Beautiful work on the mottle and decals. I’ve seen Maketar (Czech company) has just released a set of chevron and bar masks, as well as the balkancruz and hakencruz masks, I’m going to try these out on a 109 shortly.
Jack-glad you like the camo. Nothing fancy just free hand airbrushing with post-shading.
Commander John- Glad you like the weathering. Sometimes I think I go too far, buy by the end of the build things have subtled down some.
Andrew- Great! my crappy color pe seatbelts fooled someone! I have a love/hate relationship with these. I’d love to try Fabric belts, but haven’t shelled out the dough for them yet. I try to twist and realistically pose my pe belts, but this usually causes the superglue to break or the color to flake off the etch[:@] I wanted to pose one shoulder harness hanging outside the cockpit, but just couldn’t get it right on that particular day. I’d imagine fabric style would be much better for that. I hope you have good luck with your masks. I’m using Montex on my Ki-100 right now and they are turning out good. Gotta learn to be light with the airbrush though…
That’s a beautiful bird. What would be the one piece of advice that you could give to someone who would like for their aircraft models to look that good?
