I had picked this up on sale quite awhile ago and finally decided to do something with this. It is the Eduard 1/48th scale Bell X-1 ProfiPak. For those of you not familiar with Eduard kits, ProfiPak means that it comes with Resin and Photo Etch parts in addition to the kit. They sometimes come with different or extra decals too, like this kit did.
This is a typical Eduard kit, the fit is pretty good but no locators on fuselage halves and the wheel wells are kinda boring. The cockpit is well done and you do get to see a fair amount of it through the windshield. I had trouble with the colors Eduard called out, the Testors numbers referenced do not exist and I could not find the Tamiya color at my LHS. I did find a Tamiya 1/72nd scale kit that called for Tamiya x-6, but I still didn’t like it so I used a mixture of Interntional Orange, Marker Yellow and White. If the like the X-1 and want a 1/48th scale kit, this is a decent one… Enjoy!
JR, neat looking model! I was able to see the real thing at the Air and Space Museum in DC over the summer. It’s amazing to think of strapping yourself in one of those things to see how fast you can go!
Rossjr, You’ve done a great job on the X-1. Chuck would be proud. I wish I could find the Profit Pack version but Eduard quit making it a while ago (I think), so I’m SOL. Once again, awesome build!
Very nice build. I built the kit when it first came out several years ago & did quite a bit of research on the color. I agree the Eduard references were incorrect I’d say you nailed it pretty well.
Nice job on the build !!! I have the standard version here that I picked up from ebay for about $8. I have yet to build mine but I hope it comes out as nice as yours. Your choice of colour looks perfect.
ross, can you eloborate a little bit about the specific mixing ratio of the colors used?..i plan to model that aircraft soon and my next build is also going to require some of the same color
The best I can do is tell you that I started with about 50% of International Orange and mixed 25% Marker Yellow along with 25% Flat White. These are all Model Master Enamel colors.
