I am a new member but I have been modeling off and on for many years but I am looking at getting into this more as a serious hobby. Now that my life has calmed down since I have been out of college for a year. I am looking forward to many projects and dioramas.
Question that I have is for the Trumpeter 1/35 Stryker M1126. I am looking at acquiring the photo etched kit Eduard Slat Armor AFV for this model. Question 1: I found one online that comes with the slat armor but no body armor… do i need the body armor to install the slat armor? The reason I ask is online hobby distributors it runs for 100 dollars. Its shown with both slats and armor in the pictures yet doesnt state what comes with it. One I saw on ebay brand new is 32 dollars and there is no body armor just the slats. Reasoning I am confused is I read some where that they both must be used in order to have this item installed. I hope this makes sense.
Second question how do I assemble photo etched pieces? Do I use a certain glue or do i need to sadder?

Unfortunately, yes, you have to have the add-on armor plates and the Slat Armor set. The Slat is added over the add-on plates.
Trumpeter M1127Here is a using the Eduard add-on armor set, slat armor set, upper blast panel set, Rhino anti-IED device set, and a bit of scratch-building. It was a bear of a project. The Slat Armor PE was not fun, to say the least.
To build the PE slat, you can either solder or use superglue for it. If you have not used PE before, I recommend some easier sets to start out with and then build up to the slat armor. Also, you may want some sort of PE bending tool to make it easier. I have an Etch-mate that works well.
If you don’t want to use PE, there are some Strykers in Afghanistan without it, or you could make on in a training environment stateside or in Europe.

Well wasn’t the answer I was hoping for but it does answer my question. I think now I am going to because I like a challenge and after seeing your model that you built. Yes very inspiring.
So I guess the next question is why use the armor? Is it need to hold the Slat supports or for realistic purposes? Noob question I know.
Secondly how did the paint process go? Place bracing onto model then paint. Then place slats then paint? This looks like a couple of weeks of swearing and a bunch of Visine with some Advil.

Reason why I am doing this is for my brother. He is on his 3rd tour in Iraq. He is a Captain in the 3ID working underneath the General. Last two deployments he would lead convoys with his M1117 Guardian. So I want to make a convoy diorama. Cause now he is a pencil pusher and I know he misses the road.
Diorama vehicles.
Stryker, M117, HMETT cause Oshkosh is 20 Min away and we always thought they were beasts, up armored HMVEE or a MRAP

The add-on armor is for realism. The slat will fit w/o it, but the real vehicles have both.
I painted it all as one just as you see it in my pics. I used an airbrush to spray it all. After the base coat was on, I picked out any details that were needed.
Funny coincidence. I am in 3ID and back at Stewart. I got back from Iraq ( tour #2) last May. Who is your brother, I probably know him? I work on the CG’s staff as the IG.
