Ebay sniper?

Sorry, this is probably best posted in Odds & Ends, but a response should be quicker here. Today I got beat out by a bidder that was named cs. After they won the bid, it changed to sacrificial-doll. What is that all about? I’ve seen many a*d type names lately. What does that mean? Thanks for any light on this.

Not sure I understand because of the “bleeped-out” names???

That’s how they were entered. C**S. Beats me why. Lots of them lately with asteriks in their names.

What I wonder, was this C**S guy working for the afformentioned Sacrificial-Doll? So when the guy won, it changed to the guy he was working for? Never seen that before.

Yeah, I’ve seen that too! Haven’t had time to figure it out though. Is this a new eBay method to protect bidders during the bidding process?

That could be it. Maybe because of bidding wars in the past w/ rivals, some folks don’t want to use their “normal” screen names…maybe some folks are cuasing “false” bidding wars w/ certain rivals and this is one way to “fool” your rival???

I was thinking this too. The bid was almost free until the last minute when I bidded. Ironically the first rebid they did fell short, then the next leaped me.

What has happened, ebay has really been cracking down on the scammers who read auctions and see all the bidders. The Unscropulus swine would then contact the bidder’s of said auction and give them an Offer to buy the same product (or model for us) and many of these Unsuspecting Bidders would fall for an Outside Deal. Which in most cases turns out to be fake. It use to be just on Items over $200.00 that the names were disquised, but now it is on everything. If you are a Seller you can still read the Bidders real ID’d if you are logged in.

Not really familiar with Ebay but I have heard there are programs out there which bid on the behalf of people. Sort of like a 'bot.

That may be what happened.

Ditto that. Summit’s on top of it. [tup]

Tigerman, I wonder if C***S is me…Ebay handle is CycledupeS. Heh. [;)]

We really need to quit trying to outbid each other on stuff and work together. [(-D]

Actually it states on ebay–you have to hunt around a bit to find it–that this is a new policy to protect bidders’ identities for whatever reasons.

After the auction is over, the name of the winning bidder is made public. You can NOT, so far as I have experienced, see the bidders’ names even if you are logged in.

Doog, I meant if you were the seller of the Item you can still see who all the Bidders are. Sorry for the Confusion.

Hah, makes sense bud, but the guy came up as sacrificial-doll.

I’ve been on eBay now for almost 11 years. Within the past year, they now only show the first and last character of the bidder’s user ID. I think it was done for several reasons, some of which were mentioned in this thread already.

I know there were also folks who would look to see what else a bidder was bidding on, assuming that the bidder would have similar interests as they did. Years ago, I remember one bidder used to bid on just about every single Eduard PE set. He would bid on dozens of them, running many of them over their retail price. He won most of them, but I could see which auctions he was bidding on, pop open two windows simultaneously for the various auctions and then bid on the one I wanted. I could then bid up those others using the minimum bid at a time and keep him busy trying to remain the high bidder.

While he was occupied with the other sets, I place a high bid on the one set I wanted just as it was about to end.

Yep–you’re right! [:D]
