Today, I think I got lucky on nailing a vintage 1969 1:32 Revell Stuka JU-87B (snake) for $18. I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to get this kit at a reasonable price. I was hoping the day after Christmas there wasn’t much activity and I got lucky. I’ve been wanting this kit for a number of reasons. Mostly because I remember building this as a kid. I remember the white plastic and not having enough money for paint, so I just put the decals on, after I built it. I didn’t care if it had no paint…the snake decal was cool and I remember the build as fun. Most of these have been going to collectors on ebay for over $50, but I plan to build it and re-live part of my childhood in the process…maybe I will have one of my boys help me put it together.
Nice one, well done. would love a 32nd Ju 87B. Is it just me or does anyone else not get collectors. Not only do they drive up [rices for real modellers, i just don’t get this thing of buying things and just leaving them in the box.
That is always a good feeling when you get a good deal on ebay. Luck, patience, and timing seem to be the way it goes. I look forward to seeing pictures of it as you build it!
I hear you…also, I don’t know of any Holy Grails of plastic models that would fetch Honus Wagner type numbers…at best, one may make a few bucks off of few rare kits. But I am with you…I just don’t get it, but I won’t look down my nose. But I do wish it wouldn’t drive the prices up on some older kits.
This collecting thing just gets silly. Referance books can be even worse. I am currently trying to get a number of books from the Classic Publications Classic Colours series. Many of these are out of print and the ones you can get in shops go for around £17. But some of the harder ones to get are on E-bay & Amazon for around £1,400. Makes me wounder what planet some people are on.
[dto:] That’s how I feel about ebay too. Sometimes there is nothing like the feeling of winning a bid that someone else wanted, and beating them out at the last second by 25-50 cents. [6]
I agree about the collectors raising the prices, especially about how sad it is that a kit may just sit on a shelf when one of us really have an emotional reason for wanting to build a particular model. But, it may actually be a blessing in disguise. I have noticed that a fair share of these models are found at estate auctions, which means that the person who found it knew he or she was going to make a profit off of buying it and putting it on ebay. Otherwise, these models very well could have ended up just being tossed. I would say it is just another instance of having to take the bad with the good.
Ya done good, as current collector-price for that kit’s starting around 75.00… The Ki-61 Tony hits around 75.00 too, and the 1971 release of the 1/32 J2M3 Jack start at 225.00…
Not sure I understand the “collectors” aspect on some things. I guess it would be nice to pass along a rare coin set once one expires…but to spend all your time collecting plastic models and then have your kin put them in an estate sale seems kind of a strange. I told my boys that when I eventually kick the bucket they can either keep or sell my stash and keep or blow-up all my built kits…i got my enjoyment out of them!!!
