Eastern Front 109 hardware

I was reading the Osprey “Aircraft of the Aces - Bf109 Aces of the Russian Front” when I came across something I’ve never seen before. In the early blitz against Russian airfields, some 109s carried racks of SD-2 Splitterbomben (butterfly bombs). They carried 96 7.5oz bombs on four racks that could be fused to explode on impact or air-burst. I guess these things took out RIDICULOUS numbers of Red Airforce craft on the ground, to the tune of 1200 in one day![:O]

My question is, does anyone know of anything aftermarket for these things?

Heck, I’d be happy with proper reference photos or drawings to make my own.

ANy help is greatly appreciated.

I can help with pics anyways-- these sites are in German- but here are some pics:

Thehanaman, try this site:

Switch to English navigation, and go to the ‘Equipment’ tab, then ‘Drop Weapons’ and scroll down, there’s a good close up of a rack of these butterfly bombs.

Hope this helps.

Hey Karl, where do you switch to english on that link you gave?

I’m gonna take a wild guess and say on the left where it says ‘English Navigation’… [;)][:p]

Thanks for a great site. And, I notice that on the drop tank section there are photos of more different versions of German cluster bomb units that I was not aware existed. It’s sort of amazing at how similar the bomblets on the 109 are to the ones carried in our Vietnam era CBU’s, though I don’t know if they have the little pop-out “helipcopter rotors” like our modern ones. With all those pigtails hanging down, I would guess this would be a real bear to model.
