Early Hasegawa 1/48 F-4 Phantoms

Guys I have two early Hasegawa F-4’s I have the B/N and the J from the early production runs. I have the RF-4 conversion kit from Black Box for the cockpit and the nose conversion. I have no decals per say for the J model that are useable, so I was wondering if I could use the J model to make the RF-4B or would that look to incorrect. I want serious advice on this only. No it is up to you, I want to know how accurate it would be to do this. I have several sets for the B model, but like I said none for the J. And I have at least two or three to chose from for the RF-4B, and even one or more for the RF-4C. I was thinking of trying to accomplish this one for the USMC group build along with the F-18’s that I am already working on. Thanks. Take care.

The RF-4b was based on the b-model airframe with the nose section of the RF-4c. The most distinctive differnce between the B/N and the J, were the bulged wings, slotted stabilizers and different afterburner cans. This is because the J model was based on the airforce’s C/D models. If you want to convert a J into a B, you’ll have to replace the wings and stabilizers, and find some other cans. It would be easier to convert the J into the RF-4c, because then you would only have to replace the burner cans.

I hope I’m correct with this, because I don’t have my reverences with me right now. But I believe it was something like this. Hopefully it was helpful anyway.

Well I might be able to pull that one off. As I have three older F-4’s that are unfortunatley relegated to the spares box and I don’t know if they are in there or not. But it is enough for me to get curious. Thanks stoomfluit.

You are 100% correct. The F-4B/N and RF-4B had the “Slim Wing”, smaller wheels and tires, short Burner Cans and non slotted stab.

The F-4J had the bulged wings and gear doors as well as the slotted stab and longer Burner Cans.

All the F-4B/N/J/S versions had different rear cockpit panels than the Air Force F-4C/D/E/G. You can take a F-4J and make an AF RF-4C as the older Hasagawa kits had the Air Force style rear cockpits. Just change the stabs and use smaller burner cans. Remove the launch hooks, fill in the IFR door, remove the antennas under the intakes and engrave the IFR receptacle on the back bone.

The best way is to order some decals for the F-4J.

Berny I think you are right. Especially seeing that I have no scratchbuilding experience and that i already have to rescribe everything. Thanks guys. Take care.
