FYI: In the mail yesterday I got my latest edition of Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine. On the cover they have a pair of EA-19G Growler’s . Inside they provide the following description:
“To keep uo with the EA-18G Growlers of test squadron VX-9, photographer Ted Carlson caught a ride in March 1009 in a Super Hornet. While the Growler pilots evaluated jamming systems over the Navy’s China Lake station, Carlson framed the two-ship formation against California’s Panamint Mountains.”
Now this guy Carlson has a job the majority of us would give our eye teeth for!
Beginning on page 40, Air & Space has a lengthy article, which I have not read yet, entitled “When Hornets Growl” which includes a nose on shot of a EA-18G pointing out its load-out. Now all we need is someone to build one up!
I just got my issue on Wednesday. The pictures of those Growlers are amazing, especially the one where it shows the load-out.
An interesting thing of note. Maybe everyone else knew this but I never did: It said that Growler crews can now communicate while jamming which is something the Prowler could never do. (Or words to that effect.) I never knew that!
I’m looking forward to reading the magazine from cover to cover over the weekend.
I didn’t know that either re. Prowler’s. I see you are in Green Bay, WI. One of my former bosses lives up there also. I don’t have to ask who you, and he (a seson ticket holder), are pulling for in the Super Bowl!
Ha-ha-ha! I guess I’m still in a state of shock (as Weird Al would say). One day we’re losing to the Lions 7-3 and the next thing I know, we’re in the Super Bowl!
Back when I was a kid living in Hawaii in the '70s, and therefor without a local pro football team to cheer for, I used to root for the Steelers ESPECIALLY whenever they played and beat Dallas. How could you not root for Mean Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, etc. But after living in HI, we moved to Green Bay. Ever since I got autographs from the likes of coach Bart Star, Lynn Dickey, James Lofton, Jan Stenerud et al, I’ve been a die-hard Packer backer.
Any known plans for a 1/72nd scale Growler? Dragon had a release a while back but I understood it to be a re boxed Hasegawa “F” with added sprues for the pods and other parts, and an added decal sheet. It was a model of the “mock up” prototype and not a true Growler. I ran across one a while back but decided to hold out for the real deal, if one ever comes…
Actually, the Italeri kit is an updated set of molds. My only cons of the kit now is the bathtub cockpit and the lack of the updated “Rhino” nose. But styrene stock can cure that. I’m guessing the kit is also based off of EA-1 which are nothing more than refitted F/A-18F’s, which have 90% of the same parts. So I would say the kit is a true “Growler”.
