Aaaaahhh help. I am working on a 1/72 Northamerican Rockwell T-2C Buckeye. I used a Pavla resin cockpit and vacuform canopy. I am nearing the end of the project and just took the tape off the canopy. The masking/painting came out beautifully. However, there was something on the canopy that I thought was tape residue. I used some googone without effect. I have decided that the problem is dust (?) on the inside of the canopy which I can not get to. I bought an anti-static gun and directed it toward the canopy. I tapped on the canopy and sprayed a can of air inside the model. This got rid of about 75% of whatever is on the inside of the canopy. Because of the resin cockpit I can’t direct the air directly on the inside of the canopy. Has anyone had this experience?/and suggestions before I call the suicide hotline. Thanks!
Bummer! I had something similar happen to a B-17 top turret. Solution was to saw off the turret with a razor saw and replace it with a new vacu-formed turret, trimmed to fit the base of the old turret after I butchered it. Of course the machine guns came off with the turret and could not be re- used. Not recommended! It is not noticeable to the uninformed, standing 5 feet away!
I would just leave yours alone, and consider it as internal weathering-
Update. I drilled a small hole in the nose wheel well which I will be able to cover with the nose gear. I could fit the end of the compressed air tube up into the front cockpit. I’ve now gotten about 90% of whatever is on the inside of the canopy off but I’m afraid to do much more. I’d sure like to know what might be causing it. Its a brownish substance that doesn’t look like anything that should have been inside the fuselage. The resin cockpit tub was gray. I’m wondering if it could have been formed by some kind of chemical reaction, etc…I’d like to know how to avoid this in the future. Things were going so well…
I’ve never had that to happen. What adhesive did you attach the canopy with?
Micro Kristal Klear. Whatever is on the inside of the canopy was dust like. Most if blew off or fell off when I blasted it with air and tapped the canopy. I bent a very small Tamiya q-tip and stuck it up thru the hole and rubbed some of the stuff off but not all of it came off, even after wetting the q-tip.
I have had this happen several times, but have yet to find a remedy short of taking canopy off.
Thanks! I am afraid that the way I put this together the canopy is an integral part of the model. Its not coming off. I got most of the stuff off and I’m starting to deal with it. At some point I guess you just have to say its the best you can do. Its actually the first model I’ve built in about 20 years and all things considered, I’m fairly pleased. I used to build airliners, no canopies.
I’ve had dust (styrene sanding dust) muck up airliner windows/windshields during late stages of construction.
Wax and polish inside canopy and problem solved.
Polishing the canopy with Novus #1 is supposed to repel dust. That might be worth a try next time.
