hey guys i know this is a realy stupid question to ask but could any of you guys tell me what “dry brushing” is?
The only “dumb” question is one you DON’T ask!!
So to answer you question [:)] Dry brushing is a technique where you use a short firm bristle brush to highlight detail and edges on a model. Generally you will use a light colored paint to give raised details a more “lighted” look and to emphasis “shadow” around them (which brings in washes). To dry brush you get a small amount of the paint on the brush and then wipe it off on a piece of cardboard, paper, plastic or whatever until the brush is almost “dry”. Then lightly brush across the raised detail repeatedly building up the light color to highlight the detail. It’s easy with just a little practice so give it a try.
If you don’t know how to do washes either (I won’t assume) just ask another “smart” question, because that how we all learned at one point!

This forum has a pretty nifty tool. Towards the top of each page is a “search” tag. click on it and the menu will guide you through and pretty much give you a comprehensive search of whatever keyword you enter. Either in the topic or in the text of the postings. You can glean an amazing amount of info this way and its fun.
Eric hit it on the nose, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. If you don’t know something ask, its how we all learned. This isn’t instinctual, its not buried in racial memory, and we all started somewhere.
I’ll echo dubix’s suggestion as well that you pick up either at the newstand or via subscription this and any one of the other trade magazines out there. They are a good read, have plenty of helpful topics and pics and are little reference manuals and training aids all wrapped up in one.

hey pest, this forum rocks. I have posted when I need some info and it never takes more than a day to get at least 1 response, dry brushing is a great way to add that final detail to something. I build what ever catches my eye at the time, so it can be a nascar or a sci-fi ship. for ships or to make something look “used” artists chalks shaved with a knife onto a piece of paper, then use a wide soft brush, tap into powder , tap brush with finger, and apply to model. add powder till you get the effect you want, if you don’t like it you can wash it off with good ol h2o. oh yeah ask the wife before “borrowing” any brushes from her. they get territorial about these things. make up brushes are great for dry brushing large area’s and are cheap at the $ dollar store.
