Dumb Question about Washes

I have trouble with washes; Every time i apply a wash to a model the paint goes all puckered and it looks terrible. i have just ruined a face and i am understandably annoyed at myself. I was thinking maybe the thinners i am using(Caltex Mineral turpentine) is too hardcore for model paints(i use Humbrol Enamels), or maybe i am just diluting the wash to much.Any tips pointers advice on washes would be greatly appreciated by this beleagered beginner.
Cheers.[8)]

Sounds like the turpentine is attacking the enamel either because its just too strong or maybe you didn’t let the paint cure long enough. Most people seem to waiting 48 hrs to a week depending on your preference. I’m never meeting deadlines so I don’t mind waiting a week before I do a wash. And your mileage will vary depending on what thinner vs. what paint your using.

One thing I always do prior to a wash is shoot a coat of future on it. This helps out a couple things. It helps seal the pores of the paint which flat paint tends to get dark when you wash it unsealed. Also futures glossy coat adds a barrier between the paint and the thinner from the wash. And it helps the wash flow better. I just want to dirty things up…and if at all possible not darken the overall paint job.

If you don’t like the idea of shooting future on maybe you could try experimenting with curing time and thinners. Best of luck with it [:)]

Thanks for the advice, i will try that in future. hopefully i will avoid any more face melting incidents.[:)]

You can also try a product called “The Detailer”, which is a water based wash. You can get it at any well stocked hobby shop.
