I’m putting the finishing touches to my first project after a 15 year hiatus and I have a really dumb question, so please forgive me. I have airbrushed the model with Model Masters enamel, and when I finish attaching the last of the PE, I want to spray it with Testor’s Dullcoat. I’m 99.9% certain that this can be done with no ill effect on my paint job, but since it has taken me a year to complete the model and airbrushing came out so well, I’m not taking any chances. For some reason I think I remember hearing about some laquer over enamel horror stories. But, maybe not. Are there any pitfalls in doing this I should be aware of ? Should the Dullcoat be thinned ? Should the applying of the Dullcoat be a “misting” type of spray ? Or sprayed directly onto the model like it was a coat of paint ?
Testors dull coat has the potential to make your decals wrinkle. Use light coats with some dry time between. I have switched over to Polly Scale clear flat for my dull coats now - I like it much better than the testors product.
Is the Polly Scale clear flat acrylic ? Does it need to be thinned to spray ? If so, I think I have some that came with a decal application kit I got from MicroMark. No problems or issues with putting acrylic over enamel ? I wouldn’t think so, but like I said, I want to leave no chance to ruining the paint job I did. [;)]
Testor’s Dullcoat is what I use. I first seal the decals with Future, let it dry a couple of days, and the dullcoat. I thinit to almost 50:50, then apply it in several misting coats. The Future will protect the decals, and since it “shrinks” when it levels, it helps the decals become part of the model’s surface. My only bad experiences with Dullcoat were over un-sealed decals & Gunze Sangyo paint. Hope this helps.
