Does anyone use the thick brush on type dullcoat (Testors)? My question is… can this be thinned enough to run it through an airbrush or will there be some wierd chemical reaction causing nuclear fallout and the destruction of the human race as we know it?
“Thick brush on type dullcoat”? I never knew there was such an animal. I use the acrylic dullcoat from Tamiya and Model Masters, and I thin it 10:1 or 5:1 - Future:Dull Coat, when airbrushing. (Depending on how flat I want it.) Works great. No fall-out.
Mmm, interesting. Future is great to work with, i think its great. But does leave abit of a shine, would like to dull it down abit. 5fututre to 1dull coat, ill give that a try.
is that the stuff in the tall, rectangular bottle? yes, I have that, it works really well for me when brushed, but when I need it sprayed, I buy the rattle-can version, even though I have an airbrush.
With all the other options out there for spraying flat I’d personally opt out from spraying the Testors dullcoat. The smell of that stuff is enough to kill a goat. I can’t imagine spraying a finely atomized mist of the stuff. Unless you have a good spray booth, ofcourse.[swg]
The product sold as “DullCote” by Testors is laquer. Alone, it produces a perfectly flat finished when airbrushed. It CANNOT be brushed, it’s too chemically hot and will lift enamels and possibly acrylics. It CANNOT be mixed with Future or other acrylic products without permanently gumming up your airbrush.
There are a number of acrylic flat finishes that work about as well. What people are talking about mixing with Future is Tamiya’s Flat Base.
But it always boggles my mind why anyone would risk a model they spent many hours on with an alchemist’s mixture of Flat Base and Future which could still end up too glossy or flat milky white when there are perfectly good out of the bottle clear, dead flat products. One thing I learned when I wasn’t selling insurance for a major company may years ago was K.I.S.S.—Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Mix it then apply it (hand brush or Airbrush). no mixing or worrying about how “Hot” it is because it is an Acylic.Cleans up with water and doesn’t have that lassting smell we all love.
I can not count how many decals I have eaten with that Testors stuff.
I use Krylon matte finish in a spray can. You can find it at Hobby Lobby etc. It dulls but gives a mild satin finish and it seems to even up color variations and minor mistakes in the base coat. I like the stuff and the result. Just give lite coats because it will buckle the paint if too much is applied.
Sometimes you need that certain semi-gloss. Plus, having it come out too glossy or too flat is an easy fix, just add more base or future to the mix and respray.
