Dullcoat over Bare Metal Foil

Hi everyone,

I’m about 98% done with a B-36 which I’m building for my dad’s birthday on the 22nd. I used SnJ metal powder on it along with BMF. I think the plane looks great but it’s just a bit too bright for my liking. I was thinking of toning it down by spraying some dullcoat over the whole works. Yes I know it’ll take the sheen off but I was wondering if anyone has ever used dullcoat over Bare Metal Foil. Will it adhere okay or will there be problems?

Thanks!

Eric

I’ve never done a complete model in Bare Metal Foil, prefering it for masking canopies. I would reccommend putting some foil and SNJ powder on a paint hulk and experiment with it.

In my opinion, I would NOT put dullcoat over metal foil. I have done it and was not pleased with the results. The dullcoat will diminish the BMF effect of foil and will make it appear hazy.

Just my 2 cents worth…

Andy

NOTE: I’ve never tried this

but in theory, would a fine grade of Scotch Brite dell the surface without leaving the nasty scratches?

The Scotch Brite pad is by far one of my favorite "tools’, but I think it would be too coarse for that. I would experiment buffing it out with some 0000 steel wool available in the paint dept. at Home Depot or Lowe’s etc.

I have used Model Master semi-gloss lacquer over Alclad with great results. That should adhere to the foil but again… try it in some junk 1st.
