I am at the finishing stages of my first model in ages, and I used chalk pastels for some weathering effects. When I went to seal them with a dull coat, all of the pastels basically disappeared and all of that effort seems to have been a waste. I applied the pastels to a dull topcoat and it looked fantastic. I am just wondering if there is something I didn’t do. Thank you for any help in advance.
A clear finish will definitely diminish the effects,of pastels or pigments.You either have to go heavier on the pastels and hope the clear doesn’t diminish them as much,or leave them for the last possible step and minimize handling.
Yea thats a good call. It just threw me because when I put the dull coat after the pin wash on the panel lines they really popped out, and I was kind of hoping it would do the same for the pastels. But it was basically like wasting 2 hours of my time, but nothing ventured nothing gained i guess.
Next time, after putting on the pastels, take some enamel thinner on a brush and touch it to the pastels, essentially fixing them to the model. After that dries, it will really exaggerate the pastel effect, and sealing them with a flat coat shouldn’t totally take the effect away.
