Drybrush advice needed

Hi started my first drybrush attempt, I see how it works etc…However I am using Tamiya Acrylic and it drys way too fast and is clumpy? any ideas? thanks

Get retarded…[D)] I mean get some retarder, acrylic retarder. [;)] You’ll probably need to go to a art supply store to find it. I use Golden Colors Acrylic Retarder. Mix just a couple of drops in your paint and it will give you a much slower drying time. This will give you much better results when dry-brushing as the paint will behave more like oil paints.

Sorry to go O.T on this thread, but is that the Italeri Sturmtiger Peridexion? I have the same kit still to build. Must say nice job on her.

Yes it is the Italeri kit. Other than some mods to the crane, a few scratched extras and Eduard PE, it’s OOB. Thanks for the compliments.

i must say that you did a very nice job on that kit.

I also use Tamiya Acrylic to drybrush, and I’ve never had a problem with clumpyness. I use an very old and stiff brush. It’s one of those cheap Testors brushes that are in the toy isle at Wal Mart. I shake the paint vigorously, then use the paint that has stayed on the cap. It works very well for me.

I drybrush almost exclusively in Oils. The blending characteristics is much more convincing and forgiving. I will also use Model Masters Enamels for tracks and tools. I have never used Acrylics for drybrushing so I couldn’t give sound advice only to use a slow drying medium by Liquitex. I use it with my Vallejo acrylics when doing figures and it works well.

P.S. Nice job on teh SturmTiger and Figgies Peridexion [:D]

I do pretty much the same as ridleusmc and works fine.

Moses- Glad to see you around again. Hope everything ahs been fine in the zim masters world.

I use white oil paint, and mix in the appropiate color to get the desired shade. THe plus side is the workign time, and the ability to really feather the color. DOwnside is the dry time. I use them to paint the brick on my O-scale buildings. Takes time, but so much more control. Bill

Good to see you to Lizard. It has been over 8 months since I have been really active on the forums. My daughter is 8 1/2 months old already[B)] Man time sure goes by fast. I have been putting some serious time in the model room so I am almost back to full speed.

Cheers

WOW, has it been that long Moses? Good to see you around again.

I’ve been using the Amercana acrylic paints. And been playing with oils. Like Moses said, the oils have a depth and a characteristic to them that can’t be matched. The Americana Acrylics have a nice working consistency and are a good choice (at least in my opinion) for drybrushing techniques if you want to use acrylics.

I use tamiya acrylics to dry brush, and have not had too many problems. I just load a little bit more paint than usual. But if you’d like, either thin the paint or use retarder, as mentioned above.

i use citadel (Games Workshop) paints to drybrush. They’re very thick and don’t dry immediately.

Mikey!!! Long time old man. I will be getting back on MSN very soon. Good to see ya bud.

Some great tips guys, thanks they will come in handy.

I drybrush with Tamiya Acrylics mixed with an ordinary flat white acrylic paint in tubes. It does dry a little too fast but I really don’t have a problem with it. I just mix a little paint at a time.

Some as mentioned earlier use acrylic retarders. I haven’t really tried it but I heard it is good.

Good luck.

I got some retarder , and it did the trick, I also discovered that I wasn’t taking enough paint off the brush, you really have to rub it all off (paint) and then drybrush. hence the neme , duh [:)] Thanks for all the help
