[?]I’ve noticed that there are different drop tanks for Allied aircraft and have a couple of questions. The 75 gal (tear drop), 108 gal (hot dog) and the only other used on a American fighter was a smashed potato used on P-47’s and they only appeared on the B/C models.
When were drop tanks first used?
2 The first use of the hot dogs tanks?
What was the reason for the ‘potato’ tank on the P-47’s and where can I get one in 1/48th scale?
Did any other Allied fighters sport drop tanks and what kind?
I’m trying to match up wing stores with for a dio on the Tuskegee Airman aircraft. This seems to be one area where info is lost in my references.
Tuskegee Airmen flew 5 different a/c:P-39Q, P-40L, P-47C (early D), P-51C/D and the 477th Comp Gp contained B-25J and P-47N. I’ve tried Ebony wings but they only show P-51c/d’s. There are seveal books on the T/A’s but nothing difinitive on the drop tanks.[banghead][banghead]
Squadron’s P-47 in action shows a 200 gallon “ferry tank” which is located centerline directly behind the cowl in addition there is a 200 gallon paper tank and a 200 gallon flat tank. Why there would be 2 types of 200 gallon belly tanks I dont know. As far as wing tanks I show a 150, 108 and 75.
As far as where to get the flat tanks most of the P-47 kits have them at least the ones Ive built did. I didnt use them on all planes and have extra if you want one let me know I could mail it to you.
Oops…man I am batting a big fat zero lately…I didn’t notice you were talking Jugs there…I would say the paper tanks as the guys above said…I have seen both types on them-- flat tanks under the fuselage and the 108 gallon tanks under the wings…
9X19mm: We need to talk about the extra tanks you have. didfai@aol.com.
