dremel + toothpick vs styrene

i believe i just figured out a handy way to cut styrene. cutting out some chunks out of a 1/72 kit using a milling bit chucked in a dremel, i noticed that this thing was a serious pain: the plastic would melt, collect on the bit and the whole thing would vibrate madly from the bit burrs. so i put away the proper bit and chucked in a toothpick. works great! the cut edge is very smooth, there’s practically no vibration and the spinning toothpick doesn’t wonder anywhere near as much as a harsh bit. now, i believe this doesn’t actually grind anything, it just melts the styrene out of the way like a torch cut. as a bonus, if you let this thing slip, it’ll barely leave a smear leave a smear on the surface for a stray mark unlike the grinder bit which will leave a nice chewed up trail. give it a shot. just remember to use a round toothpick. Now that’s a cool idea. Thanks for sharing!

That is pretty cool.

I’ll try it.
