Picked up Dragon’s new 1/72 Maus. Looks like a good kit, but in comparing it to the Pegasus Hobbies 1/72 Maus I bought last year, I’d have to say Pegasus Hobbies is the clear winner as far as detail and molding goes. I haven’t built either kit, so I can’t comment on how well either one goes together. What really puts Pegasus over the top is the excellent molding of the armored surfaces. Very well done.
The Dragon kit does come with the prototype’s turret mock-up, if you want to build that often-photographed version. It’s also about $5 USD cheaper than the Pegasus kit.
The turret seems to sit a bit high on the Dragon kit, as it also does on Dragon’s E-100, which shares the same turret. Truth be told, I bought the Dragon Maus for its 128mm cannon, which I’ll use to modify the E-100 in the same way I did with the 1/35 version.
Anyway, the kit’s out here in Japan, and should be making its way around the world soon. Again, it looks like a decent kit, but if you want something a good bit better for just a little more money, get the Pegasus Hobbies kit.
