DRAGON TIGER (LATE) INFO

Just happened to stumble on this:

http://www.dragonmodelsusa.com/dmlusa/prodd.asp?pid=DRA6406

“Newly tooled slide-molded DS track with revised pattern”?

Doesn’t “DS” mean “Dragon Styrene”, that stuff they make their 1/72 kits’ tracks (and those of 1/35 Shermans) from? Seems odd they wouldn’t use indep links on such a high-profile kit, designed presumably for people to whom Magic Tracks have become second nature.

bin wating for it for a long time i’m gonna pre order it at great moddels now

Ah…[censored]. Sorry for the offensive language. [:D] I can hear the masses screaming “Not another Tiger tank!” Well, it’s been done and this is tweaked from the first, so I wouldn’t really call it “all new”.

GM just emailed me saying it’s on pre-order. Mad dash to the credit card! [}:)]

same here Eric I pre ordered mine as soon as I saw it was out

can’t wait till it comes in June

Not to pop your bubble tiger boy, but on my last pre-order, they bumped the price up $8 and didn’t get any in until much, much later.

Awesome! But how is this kit really different from the Dragon Late Production Tiger I “3 in 1”, Number 6253, released in 2005 after a very protracted wait? Did they maybe fix the warped hull problem?

Actually Uproar, on Dragon’s website, they talked about how the perceived warped hull was actually designed that way on purpose, so as to fit the top on via friction or something like that. Check out the above thread, it list some newly tooled pieces. I’m not sure this will be a better overall kit. I would have like to have seen a Smart kit. I still need to try some of those.

Why another Tiger I wonder, especially that they have that 3 in 1 kit already.

I prefered for Panzer III family or Panzer II family.

Ben

Ben, I agree. After they came out with a Marder II, a newly tooled Pz II would have been a no-brainer. On many wish lists too. I guess we’ll have to be patient. I’m still trying to be patient for a new BT-7.

Ben and Tigerman: It’s not another kit. The Late Tiger 3in1 went out of production rather quickly (see the $100 ebay ones!). This is, in a way, a re-issue of an older kit with the latest fixes. It’s very welcome by me (who traded my kit away awhile ago assuming that they’d be readily available – I’m glad I waited until now)

Simple, the DML Tigers are still in huge demand. They sold out pretty damn quickly, and people on eBay and other selling sites are ridding themselves of it for, on average $75 to $100 USD. Yes, I know, another Tiger, but I’m glad that they’re re-releasing this kit.

Is this the definitive Tiger I Late?

I think it is a perfect example of the market manipulation that Dragon and Cyberhobby (particularly) pulls off so consistently and so well. They advertise a “new and improved”, “3 in 1” version of something for months and months, postpone the release date a few times to build suspense and anticipation, then release it in very limited quantities, to assure that they all sell out very quickly at an inflated price…then, back to the drawing board, tweak the same kit a bit into another “version”, and repeat the process…this is called “business”–not only do they seem to be into producing (admittedly very high quality) kits, but they also seem to be into producing “collector’s items”–I’m sure there are a lot of people out there buying the kit with no intention of actually building it–that is what eBay is for. When was the last time you saw a Tamiya kit sell out completely and irreversibly during “preorder”? Why don’t they just keep producing the same good kit and keep it available? It is purely a business ploy…right along with the hyperbolic hype that Dragon plasters all over the kit box and the website which tends to make the kit in question seem more akin to a cure for cancer than a plastic model kit. Now, don’t get me wrong, DML is in the business of making money, and they have every right to pursue whatever strategy works for them to achieve that end, and they do produce excellent kits…and it actually is rather brilliant. But, I think that modelers ought to think about and be aware of the manipulation before they plunk down another $50 or so on the next “definitive” DML armour kit in a flashy new box. Hmmmm…how many different versions of the “King Tiger” do they produce?

Caveat emptor.

I built the last DML late together with my father.
After experimenting heavily on old kits using Crockets hot soldering technique we decided to go putty!? on this one:( In between us we managed to make a complete mess of the Zimmerit leaving us with a poor result.
By the time the first issue was sold out, and spending those ridicules sums on ebay was never an option.
I am glad that they are re releasing, I welcome any tweak to the last release and have pre ordered.
Keep 'em cool cats coming:)

I still think of you as building all things Russian, though I recall your Opel Blitz recently.

Uproar, I agree about the Dragon comments about “supply and demand”, keeps the interest up to make everyone want one. You wonder if it hurt some of their sales. I mean they may have gotten much more Tiger buyers if they had the product, but instead modelers might have opted for AFV or Tamiya, despite being inferior kits. I see Tamiya Tigers selling all the time on ebay.

OT, but Chrysler gaffed when the PT Cruiser came out and they just didn’t deliver the car in numbers despite great interest. When they finally massed produced it, they started sitting on the lots, because drivers looked elsewhere. Not smart marketing/business.

And all the while I thought that tigers are getting extinct all over the world! The conservationists should get advise from Dragon on how to do it.

Does anybody know what the difference will be between the first one and this new one?[%-)]

I hope it still has the Michael Wittmann figure.

Tiger boy, you may be confusing the Dragon kit with the AFV Club Wittman Tiger I. I don’t believe the Dragon kit came with one.

The differences are really subtle IMO. If you go to the site mentioned earlier in the thread, it more or less mentions the newly tooled parts.

the first run of the late version tiger 1 had a figure and it looked exactly like Michael Wittmann in the picture to the left
