Not posted in a while, have been collecting a few kits here and there, and as i haven’t made or owned a tank kit in ages i thought better get some in, a few that i got have caught my eye and being made by dragon (PZ IV Ausf.E vorpanzer 6301) (Tiger I Initial prod’ 6252) (panther D. 6299). first i’ve gotta say i never made a dragon kit, years ago i stuck totally to tamyia, so opening some of the boxes i could not believe what are in these boxes, how times have change! anyway somethings bugging me with the grills on the tiger 1, do they have mesh on them or in them!, dragon say they don’t supply them with the kit because normal mesh grills would look wrong, has anybody got a close up pictures of these first tiger 1 grills.
I don’t have the kit, so I don’t know just exactly what comes in the box, but according to the PMMS review, you should have the engine grate screens included with the PE fret.

Thanks for that link kykeon, i’ve read the review but it don’t say anything about P.E mesh-screens. but the picture shows that they did have screens so thanks for that! if anyone has had a go at making this kit let me know.

aftyer looking through the instruction sheet and at the vehicle itself there are no mesh screens on the air intake or exhausts that i can see[#welcome]
but in the picture posted it shows screens on an initial tiger 1, this is what dragon say on there website, Why are there no engine deck mesh screens?
In actual fact, the mesh screens of the initial Tiger I have a slightly concave shape, rather than being just flat. Since we were not able to reproduce the curved nature of the mesh screens in photo-etched metal in present technology, we took the decision not to include them, simply because we did not wish to include just plain flat screens in our kit. so what do they look like, does anybody no.
squadron signal publication;tiger in action has some clear photo’s of mesh over the areas of the engine deck you might look at.i have not read the review you spoke of now perhaps i to will need to update.thank you for pointing them out.

Very early Tiger I’s may not have had intake screens; they were added after a few vehicles had been produced, to prevent enemy infantry from tossing grenades down the intakes. There are no screens included with the Dragon kit, but no screens may not be accurate for all early Tigers.

I think when the Dragon instructions mention that, they mean the intake ribs, the piece shown in this picture:
Notce how they have a curved cross section, while previous kit manufacturers just cast this part straight with no curve.
Dragon obviously provides no intake screens, which is accurate for the first few Tigers, but the #100 Tiger in the kit did have them, as seen in reference photos. You could either model a very early Tiger with no mesh, or buy an AM set (tamiya makes a good one, #35217)

Some time ago, I bought a very nice set of mesh screens for the Dragon Initial 1/35 Tiger I, made by a company called “Gum Ka”–Chinese, I believe. If I remember correctly, I found them on eBay, but I think you should be able to find them at HobbyLink Japan as well. Good luck! They might be a bit scarce these days.
