Drag chute

I am interested in doing my Su-7 on the landing roll out with drag chute deployed and inflated. I can’t recall seeing this anywhere though I’m sure it has been done. Any suggestions as to how to go about modelling this. Also I hope to make ejection handles for the rather basic seat but am unclear as to how they should look. Any help with this would also be gratefully received.

You could form the open chute over a baloon. Wet your material with a resin or some sort of glue so that when it hardens it will keep its shape. You can do the same thing with the multiple schroud lines. Bring all the lines together and hang the chute upside down until the glue or resin dries. This way you should end up with straight lines that come to a point. When it is hard and/or dry pop the baloon and remove it. Use some sort of release agent for the glue or resin so the chute does not stick to the baloon.

I did this about 20 years ago with the 1/12 (I think) scale paratrooper that was made by Renwall (I think). The plastic parachute did not look right so I made one from silk and resin and nylon thread lines. I held up well until it got broken in a move.

Another alternative would be to carve your desired shape and vacuum form the chute. Use very thin piano wire for lines. This is a very interesting project. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the advice RangerJ - I will try to let the forum see the result if I can borrow a digital camera and work through the complexities of posting pictures! Thanks again.

There was a site it was straightlinemodelers.com or something like that.Anyway there was an article about making drag chutes similar to what rangerj said.If I find it I’ll pass it on to you.
