dot filtering question

I was wondering if it makes a differance on the colors used for the dots?

It depends on the base color of your vehicle, the effect you are trying to achieve and the tonal varaitions you are trying to enhance. Complimentary colors and contrasting colors will have a definite effect on your surface and should be taken into consideration. That being said dot filters are used to enhance panels, show oxidation of paint, rain streaks, sun fading and dust effects. For lighter tonal variation try lighter colors complimentary and contrasting, to physicly and visualy make a change. i.e. white or yellow on green will have an effect. As will brown or blue to take it the other way.

I think its important that when getting onto the level of finishing that dot filters entail, its important and you can get a little bit more out of the effect if you understand a little about color theory and have a basic familiarity with “the color wheel” and how colors interact, compliment and effect each other.

The way that the “Dot Method” is supposed to work is that it is NOT a “wash” where you’re trying to add like, say, a raw umber wash to sit in the seams in order to accentuate panel lines, etc.

To that end, do NOT use dark colors like raw umber, black, etc, nor “comlimentary” colors, like green over an Olive Drab base coat–save those for separate filter stages.

The colors you should use should be primary colors–red, yellow, blue, green, etc. Mixing these in the wash of thinner will provide a wide spectrum of a very subtle patina over the model that should be almost imperceptible. The primary colors will mix and meld into secondary colors and shades that impart a very subtle, but enriching difference to the finish that simulates the color spectrum of light playing upon the finish.

Does that make sense?!

In any case, use small dots, don’t wait too long to sart to blend them, and blend them until they’re almost gone-then dab the surface with a facial tissue to pick up the excess thinner.
