Donating Completed Models

I hope this isn’t against the forum rules, but I’m not looking to make any money on this.

I’ve run out of shelf space, and am looking for suggestions on donating some of my completed models (so I can keep building). I think I do a pretty good build; they are well made and weathered when appropriate. I’m posting this in the AIRCRAFT section as they are mostly aircraft, and the CHARITY AND GOODWILL section is not as widely read.

Any suggestions welcome.

Jim

If you have a childrens or veterans hospital near by that would be a good start. You can also donate them to a veterans home, which is what I did. Some of the old vets treasure items that remind them of their time in the military.

I know some people lend their finished kits out to their LHS to be put on display to drum up some buisness for that LHS, just a thought.

Museums might like them, or maybe a school’s history department.

[#ditto] A few yrs Back the local VFW was the charter for our Scout Troop, They had a meeting room and the ceiling was filled with donated airplanes. A Very Impressive sight, and many of the Veteran’s had a past story to tell you about involving one certain aircraft.

Good topic! I bet we have all pondered this at one point and time. I have built a couple of models knowing that I would be giving them to a freind when they were done. I believe I enjoyed building these the most because they would be admired by many other people instead of being parked in a display case with many other models that only a handfull of my freinds will ever see. VFW’s would be my first suggestion. There is at least one in everyone’s home town. Museums might be more selective and futhur away. let us know how you make out.

I’d also check some of the local National Guard or Reserve Units and see if they could use them. Also I’d suggest your local Civil Air Patrol Squadron out there. It’s a good organization that that strives to instill discipline and an appreciation in history and Aerospace Education in teenagers and young adults.

Good luck![:D]

Yet another possibility is a Veterans’ Outreach Center. Most of the centers I’ve been in have a waiting room with trophy cases for memorabilia of various kinds. And don’t forget, you might be able to take a tax write-off for anything you donate, although determining the market value of a model could be problematic.

I give mine to the local CAF meuseum, so far ive donated 4 builds.

my club donates ours to the VA hospital

I agree, as a VA employee. The bed ridden vets appreciate a little personality in their rooms.

Jim,

You’re pretty close to several military installations (Ft. belvoir, Ft. Lee, etc) and Walter Reed Army Hospital as well as the Pentagon. You could try a couple of those places.

ditto the VA suggestion

also look at some of the local reserve/guard centers, maybe you can “match” the vehicle to a retiring member.

Never had too many, they still make Firecrackers… JK…

My Father has the same problem but he keeps building, he donates the older kits to the neighborhood kids…
