Impulse buys, whether thru a good sale, ebay, or sudden interest, perhaps inspired by another build. I’m guilty as charged. I found found myself with a shelf full of “why again did I get that?” Ebay is my biggest culprit. It’s hard to say no to a good deal. Also I get inspired by reading books or watching documenteries. Anyone else say “why did I buy that?”
I should say I’ve thinned the herd a bit. Besides I want newly tooled kits.
I feel your agony. I do the same thing. That’s how I ended up with collection of kits. I also bought old kits that I couldn’t afford when I was a child. I’ve been good lately. I’m building more kits (and part of 2 Group builds that potentially would allow me to build about 3 kits) and not adding anymore to my collection (actually, I did purchase AFV’s 1/35 STRYKER recently).
you are not alone tigerman, most of my collection is omg i must have it it’s the coolest thing since sliced bread wow,by my sources this is an uncurable disease wives or signifigant others have tried to no avail,we may be doomed but hopefully we’re in good company.
LOL. I was hoping I wasn’t the only one. M1 can’t blame you on the Stryker. See, I too bought modern kits, because the Iraq War built the hype, even though I strickly keep to WW II. Sorry that is the way I am. Modern just doesn’t excite me. Sorry Gino and Rob.
Most of my collections are WWII and Korean War era stuff. I have some modern stuff, but very limited numbers. I don’t get turned on my modern armor as much as I do with WWII stuff. Even my firearm collection is mostly WWI and WWII stuff. I have very few modern firearms compared to old ones.
…lol…I think it happens to every modeler who has extra money to spend…it is part of the “bug”…I just dropped $220 on three books I don’t really need on Great Models today…
The new KT book that costs $120? I saw it at the LHS. The guy behind the counter asked if I wanted to buy it. It certainly was intriguing, but $120? Yikes. I’ve got a couple already, but obviously nothing like that.
Yep…I feel your pain. My collection is different in that it is US Artillery from WWII to present BUUUTTTTT…There is the shelf which is the valley of the unknown. Missle kits form my younger years [8-], some strange German stuff [swg], and just some WHY [yuck].
Eventually I try to thin out by selling on e-bay and hope to break even [#oops].
I think I am getting better at control but there are those times where I feel like a woman in a shoe store. I just don’t want to end up like Amelda Marcos [(-D].
Definitely been guilty. In fact, I went through my inventory this past weekend and culled out 22 kits that were sent off to the Baghdad Model Club via the instructions on the IPMS website. I realized that I’d never build them, vast majority of them kits that I bought due to sales or “must have” new kits at the time but have sat on the shelf for 1 year or more, no spark, each time being passed over for something else. The real trick now will be resisting repeating that mistake again in the future. Rather than accumulate kits for the sake of having them, it’s now a return to the original question of “will I really build that?”
You mean you don’t have 7 pairs of combat boots, 3 pairs of dress shoes and 3 pairs of PT shoes? Since I was never good at shining boots/shoes, I had 7 pairs of boots and 3 pairs of Class A/B shoes. All of them were shined by the professional shoe shine service people. I sure don’t miss paying for shoe shine services anymore. My wife complains that I have just as many pair of shoes as her. But then again, my shoes are cheaper and much older than HER collection of European shoes.
Yah, me too. After I helped my son finish a KT, I sold mine and bought a Jagdtiger. Never built one before. Now I find myself watching ebay for some of their KT firesales. Must resist temptation. I really just want to build the Jagdtiger, I’ve built enough KT’s.
Are you kidding? I have, sitting in my stash and begging to be built, a Steyr conversion, a $50 resin kit to convert Tamiya’s Steyr truck into a different kind of Steyr truck. I saw in on Greatmodels or somewhere, and thought it looked cool. Of course, I do not, nor have I ever, owned the Tamiya Steyr.
But, I should point out - it really does look cool.
Likewise, I have the old Kirin resin conversion set to “zimm up” Tamiya’s old Porsche-turret King Tiger, and old (I think) DML transport tracks for the King Tiger. But I’m not sure if I have the right King Tiger in the stash. And it doesn’t matter. 'Cause the resin conversion looks cool, just like the transport tracks.
I say, buying this stuff is part of the fun. The wives have their shoes, and we have our kits.
I agree…the hobby is not just building the models. It’s the research (our wives looking at all the shoes in the closet trying to decide what to wear), looking for kits and accessories to buy (like our wives buy shoes), putting items together for different projects, looking at the stash and thinking what do I want next (like the wives in a shoe store). And lastly talking with all of you about what we have in the stash, what our latest great buy was (like our wives talk to their friends). Model making is to us like shoes are to our wives!!
Oh my God, what a [censored] nightmare…Looking at that logic, what have I degenerated to. [swg]
Well, at least I have a good argument for my wife next time she asks “what did you buy now”. [#dots]
At this point in my life if the hobby is like shoes than so be it!! I’m having FUN. [yeah]
