I’m in the final stages of painting a Hasegawa 1\48 P-38. It’s not a great kit and it’s been a tough build. I’ve gone with an olive drab\neutral grey paint scheme (enamal paint). After letting the base coat dry, I airbrushed a coat of Future floor wax and let it dry for a couple of days. I then applied decals and a pin wash (Model Master enamal paint with Testors paint thinnner).
When I went to remove the pin wash overflow with a damp paintbrush (Testors Paint Thinner) something odd happened: The overflow came off like I wanted but I think some of the wax did too. Lightly dragging the brush over the pin wash overflow caused a milky streaking to occur. This only happened on the olive drab paint, not the neutral grey paint.
I’ve never had Testors paint thinner eat thru Future wax before. Any idea what’s going on? I’m wondering if another coat of Future will help. But, it’s also kind of a neat effect…looks like weathering…so maybe I’ll just work with it. But, I would like to know what when wrong. Thanks in advance.
Next time spray the Future on thicker or brush it on!
Sounds like the Future was not a solid gloss layer.
Remember it is a acrylic gloss coat that is durable. Not a ‘wax’ Its original intent (as per bottle directions) Is a gloss coat for household floors.
When using a enamel thinner over it work fast and lightly. Its always a risky technique and to take all doubt out of the equation use acrylic base coats then you will not need the gloss layer of Future.
Work with the streaking (lucky you pulled the wash in the direction of air flow) And chalk it up to experience.
Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and incorporated the Future damage into the weathering. Looks pretty good, but not exactly as I wanted. Oh well…experience. I generally don’t like to use water based paints as I’ve not had much luck with them: Dry too quickly, clog the airbrush, etc. I’ll have to play around with them to get the thinner\paint mixture correct at some point. I just like enamels better. Thanks again for your help.
I’ll [dto:] SuppressionFire on this one, sounds like there was not a thick enough coat of Future laid down. If you’re airbrushing and afraid of having it run, just add a second coat.
