Do you take your builds with you?

Just wondering with the holidays around the corner and many of us traveling to relatives…do any of you take your builds with you…what do you take…how do you transport it…

Mark

I do take build with me. Almost everything can be done elsewhere.(except airbrushing, because of all the equipment)

I just take my basic tools with me and a few tins of paint. Then I can do most construction work. I do the painting at home.I transport the unpainted model in a box, pinned on a piece of styrofoam.

It is mostly a question of preparation: choose the kit and the tasks you can do during that holiday.

Almost all my tools are in a big fishing tackle box and I keep my “in progress builds” in plastic storage containers with the snap on lids (like you get in Walmart/K-mart/Target). I have a couple different sizes between 6 and 30 gallon. This not only helps keep dust (and pets) off the models while I’m working on them, but also allows me to grab the kit, my tools and go. The big container has plenty room to throw a couple jars of paint in there (put them in a quart ziplock freezer baggie in case of spills).

Depends on where I am going, how I am getting there and how long I plan on staying…given the airlines are now charging for anything other than carry on I probably won’t if I fly. If I know I won’t have a moment to myself I don’t either. I have a travel box that I have set up which I tote stuff back and forth to club meetings and special events…finding time while visiting relatives usually is a luxury, not the norm, so I don’t take models along. It doesn’t stop me from finding more while shopping to bring them back though!

I don’t take my builds on true vacations but my girlfriend has a second home we go to for weekend and short vacations. I take them there.

BYOB (Bring Your Own Build)? Nah…

No.

In my travels I try to visit a hobby shop in the the area. I’ve never been able to go into a hobby shop without buying something! The main limitation is fitting it into my suitcase. There’s always a few bits that can be started without painting so a snipper, knife and glue and you can “Build the one your with” (apologies to Steven Stills)!

NEVER! There is way to much that can happen to damage your model beyond repair. I would rather not take a kit with me and have it FUBAR’ED while transporting it. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

AMM, While I do take builds as stated above i agree with you on the things can happen factor. My P-38 was damaged (decals) in transit from the weekend house. Looking for replacements. Any one have any tips for removing decals?

I wouldnt want to, I went to visit, not play with my planes, kinda defeats the purpose. Besdides the fact that I wouldnt take the chance of damageing anything, my wife would be pissed at me for bringing any “of your toys” with me. That just wouldnt fly.

+1 here too[#ditto]

+2 Too much can happen away from the safety of my workbench.

Man you need to get your priorities straight. Imagine putting family visits ahead of modeling??? Stay home and build while the rest of them go visit. Just think of all the time you’ll get to concentrate on building.

just kidding of course. I don’t travel with mine because it’s just too much of a hassle to answer all the questions about what I’m working on. I let them wait and read the articles.

On the other hand, however, I did build a few models during holiday visits to my Grandma’s house when I was a kid… My Grandma lived with my Aunt & Uncle and my cousin Mark was a model builder (he’s the one that got me started modeling back in '65, as a matter of fact) and Mom and Aunt Maurine would by us both a kit while they were out shopping to keep us from hunting down the other stuff… I’d just use Mark’s stuff to build… I remember the first one, a 1:72 Spitfire, Mark got a Corsair… Heh… I remember also that I got to choose which kit I wanted to build, since I was “company” and I chose the Spit because the Corsair “looked funny” because of the inverted gull-wings. I’ve since built about 20 Corsairs, lol…

No way.

I’m always going somewhere… and my builds are done inbetween everything going on in my life.

Five minutes here, five minutes there for the most part. It takes forever for me to finish, but admittedly I get plenty of relaxation and enjoy the hobby more than ever.

I think stealing away for some build time is one of my favorite things.

If I read this thread it looks like 50% of the modellers take their models with them 50% leaves them at home.

Maybe it also depends on your mode of travelling. I useally go by car, so I can transport my models in safety (or at least my own responseability)

If I go by plane I do not take any models, maybe just some figures (already primed), brushes and a small selections of paint (games workshop: transparant pots, small quantity, water soluable (all because of safety regulations) , and of course a screw cap (because of the pressure. Do not take Humbrol tins with you!! The lids wil pop of))
