How many of you remember the first armour kit that you built.
I used to model 1/72 aircraft until a family member bought me Tamiya’s Sd.Kfz. 232 kit. Hooked right then, right there, now and forever. Long gone are the aircraft but there still sits my first love “surrounded by many others” but still number 1. Most of the others are better built, better painted, and better finished but none can ever be number 1.
My first, damn I have to go way back here, must be a 1/72 or was it 1/76 from Matchbox. I realy loved those small diorama’s that came with the vehicle.
But the serious modelling began at the age of twelve when I got the 1/35 Tamiya German Horch truck from my brother. I continued building till the age of 16 or so. Then other things in life became more important (girls). I am 35 now and since a few years I picked up the old habit. They say that true love never dies…
Mine was the 1/76 M551 Sheridan from the Airfix range… I still love that kit. Then I must have gone through the whole series of other Airfix offerings, as well as Matchbox’s. As Roy said earlier on, the little diorama and the accessories that came with the kit were simply great. As an introduction to the hobby, I mean.
First eh? hrmmm… it was the old Tamyia Henschel King Tiger, its was a present from Santa!!! Eventually it wound up in my first diorama, after getting some “battle damage” (those gaping holes, bent barrel and missing wheels looked fine when i was 9!!) I definitely got the armour bug from that one… although i do build pretty much everything else too…
Si.
First one…yes i do remember,1/76 matchbox Humber. The rest as they say is history.Still love to get a hold of the matchbox range but they are hard to fine these days.Small scale is the only way to"Geek Out" as my wife likes to say.Take care and good geeking.
Ahhh yes the good old days …remember matchbox’s sdkfz 251 with that cool dude jumping over the side?? The sherman firefly ?? so cool!I think I bought and built both these kits the same day…I had done a plane or two before this …but I saw the light after those two little dioramas!! Hooked for life and never stopped since the age of 12…Soon to be forty uuuggghhhh!!
First armor? Gotta be the old Tamiya 1/35 Tiger I. Although it wasn’t finished in totally accurate cammo, I enjoyed the heck outta this kit, even though it came no where close to the quality of kits assembled since. Oh, yeah, that was 20 years ago!
It was a 1/35 Tiger, painted it with a little brush and alot of paint and way too much glue. Had to be about 28 yrs ago, I can still remember getting in trouble for blowing it up with firecrackers.
My first tank kit I had was the Monogram 1/32 Patton tank that my dad built for me. It’s long gone, but the first tank I built myself was Aurora’s 1/48 scale MBT-70. I still have that tank. My mom saved it right where I left it on my dresser. I have since rebuilt it.
That bug bit me about 5 years ago while sitting in my brothers apartment. He had a closet full of german armor and aircraft. He was working nights and I was bored stiff. I pulled out a Tamiya StuG IV and got started on it. I was finished then. Haven’t stopped building armor since. As for my brother, well, he hasn’t touched one since then. BUT he does own about half the one that I’ve built. Some how he always manages to talk me out of them. I can’t get him to get started again to save my life. Oh well, more for me to build. Model on fellas. Chris.
P.S. If you folks would like to see some of my work, please feel free to visit my home page at http://groups.msn.com/GermanArmorMania I’ve got some good stuff in there of mine and alot of my friends too. Hope you like them. [8D]
P.S.S. If you have problems with this link (Like I am), email me at PzkpwTiger@aol.com and I will send the link to your email. I can’t seem to get this one working. [:(]
I to started with aircraft and cars. A few years ago, my Father in Law asked if I would build the Tamiya 88mm for a diaroma he was working on. I was hooked from there on out.
The first tank kit I remember building was the old Aurora 1/48 Panther, which I built in the early '70s. I was already a veteran modeler, but the reason I remember this kit was that it was the first one I airbrushed with the very cheapest, cheesiest single-action brush the hardware store had. I think I painted it Pactra flat tan, and I liked the look.
Mine was A 1/32 Sherman (Monogram?) I rember it had a bad camo paint job, think I have picture of it in the freshly tilled garden. Not a good pic either, my first camera too.
