Do you collect kits with no intention of building them?

Basically just that…What is the point of keeping kits in the box never to be made? I understand colecting the box artwork but this…why?
Do not tell me about future investment ie resell etc…

Yes Sir I do. I collect Monogram 4-star kits(or other old/rare Monogram kits) and Airfix-Craftmaster mainly. Who can say why anyone gets bitten by the collectors bug but thankfully some chose to preserve the past.
Museums would be boring place with just pictures of what once was.

No offence intended Woody…It is an aspect I never thought of…Like the private collector who keeps precious art objects for himself…Away from the eyes of the unworthy to appreciate their value…lol

nope. First off, I only have about 30 unbuilt kits at this point, so not really a ‘collector’, and even if I had hundreds, I’d still have the intention of building every single one of them. I don’t see a point to owning a model to look at the box, but that’s just me. I can understand the mentality of collectors, so if others out there are unbuilt model collectors, well you know what they say: “to each his own” [:)]

Always intend to build every one I buy. Problem is, it takes a lot less time to buy than build, and then the next release comes out & the next & the next…

Every kit I bought I intended to build. Now that I have over 80+kits unbuilt I am only kidding myself in the fact that I will build them all.[:p] Collectors items? Who knows, but I will donate them to a good cause before I will ever sell them.[}:)] Let us see what the future brings. [^] Meanwhile, will I buy more kits? Probably. LOL!!![:D][:D][:D]

Richard

Buying is as fun as building-I even enjoy just looking at the kit parts and dreaming of the day I’ll assemble them (if I live to be 100).

None taken. I’ll build an old rare kit if I can’t find it as a new release. I’ll also sell most of my kits to those who intend to build them. Some collectors get a little upset if somebody builds a rare kit but I believe ones property is to be used as the owner sees fit. You will never get rich as a collector but you might go broke! LOL[:D]

In general, I intend to build everything I buy, but…

Since you’ve said not to talk about investments, my post ends here.

I intend to build everything I buy. In fact I have a very low buying power and a good building speed that’s why my backlog is only 3 at this time. Over all I already purchased roughly about 40 kits within the span of 19 months and I have completed all except for the 3 I mentioned.

I believe it would be easier to stock up on kits if one has the buying power. And of course I would love to have more kits but unfortunately I have a very small hobby budget.

This is me too.

I’m with Rick and Tim. I have to watch the buying, because it’s too easy to get caught up in the “kit of the moment” talk in the forums everytime there is a new release. I do hunt for exceptional priced kits or budget buys. I admit(quietly to myself) that I don’t need every variation of a armor type, so that will hopefully control the spending.

I have about thirty kits waiting in the wings and intend on building each and every one. Not in any particular order and will probably pick up a few more to boot. I cant imagin picking out a kit just to say I’ve got it without adding glue and paint.

There is an issue with unmade kits…I have 50 unmade but always with the intention of building them…Now I have 12 on production line, awaiting from filler and paint and landing gear plug to decaling.

To quote rjkplasticmod: “Always intend to build every one I buy. Problem is, it takes a lot less time to buy than build”
definitely applies to me as well! I usually only buy second-hand kits from collector’s fairs and kit sales, however I still have around 200 aircraft and several dozen AFVs unbuilt!
The main problem is finding space to display them, particularly multi-engine bombers! I recently built a 1/48 B-24, and last month I bought a 1/48 Halifax - a bargain for £5, but where do I put it when I’ve built it?

[#ditto] And me [:D][:D]

I have every intention of building what i buy but time works against me. Plus the kids and wife don’t help

i enjoy choosing a build project from my collection [:)], i way up the model on builing grounds and its ‘collectablility’ (if it has any) will come into the decision vaguely, often the older and rare kits suited to a collector are not so suitable for a modeller. Nostalgia builds are fun tho but if a fairly poor 1:72 30 year kit is worth $200 would it get built, traded or put in the cabinet still boxed ?
few kit collectors give their side of the story, collector dealers can be scared witless when you suggest building their rarest item [:p] - try it - its hilarious watching their face !

every kit I buy I have the intention of building . . . that means “I have the intention” of building . . . and as fate would have it . . .

only have 3 collector kits…the 1st production run from Accurate Miniatures…but, since i’ve weeded through all my kits…everything i have i’ve every intention of building…even at 6 - 12 mos. per…i might just make it…lol
just can’t stop modifying…it’s such a theraputic psychosis[banghead][censored]
