And what is wrong with living to 158 years old?[:o)]
As far as needing space, you know the old routine, “when in doubt, donate your collection to a museum or library”. I see others’ modeling collections around here all the time.
Also, as you know, Jeff in a few years, many of the kits you have will be unavailable, and yet still desirable, such as the old Aurora 1/48 scale aircraft line, which was priced at no more then 3 or so dollers, are now being sold by entrepreneurs, who have formed such websites for mearly $100 each!
So, in fact, it looks to me as though you have your retirement future “cut out” for you! [:D]
I have a stash of about 80 kits. I build around 5 a year, so in 16 years, my closet should be clean!
But here’s the catch. I buy around 5 kits a year (or more!) My discipline is rising, I am buying less, focusing more on reference, AM sets and supplies when I go to shows. But I’m always a sucker for bargain prices (obscure czech kits for 1to5 euro’s, got to have those!)
Anyhoo, i’m 26, so I might be finished with this stash at 42!
And pigs might fly![:D]
Maybe I’ll set a limit om 100 kits’s? (tried that at 50 and at 75, didn’t work then!)
Hey guys, think of it this way, if you have like 100 kits, and your in your 20’s or 30’s, and the average kit that is 30 to 40 years old runs about $40 to $100 bucks on ebay. You might have a down payment for that room at the Shady Greyhair Retirement Villa in Yuma AZ.
Last year I started to clear out a lot of my stash. I needed the cash and realised I had a fair bit stacked away in the loft. I put kits I couldn’t see myself building in the next 6 months up on eBay. Now I’m in a much better position as my modelling is more focused. I’ve still got several projects on the go but I’m telling myself I can’t buy any more until I’ve built at least one.
You never know I might actually get to finish the Battle of the Bulge dio I started in the Summer of 2003!
I only have around 20 models, not many compared to a lot of people, but it takes a lot longer to build a model then it does to buy one. So the real question is not do you want to finish your stash, its are you ever going to finish it in reality? I dont think so
I only have a few kits in my stash, because I know that I build slowly. I try not to buy too many because of this, but sometimes I just can’t help it. It’s easier for me not to buy too many kits, because the stuff that I really want to do is still in production. Still, at the rate I build vs the rate I buy, I’ll probably never finish the kits in my stash. The big question is, what motivates us to keep buying stuff that we know we’ll never get around to building?
Current stash is about 23 models. I now have a self-imposed spending freeze on models. But oh, I have so few Soviet fighter jets…maybe just one more…[:D]
hah…as i slid into this hobby, aftermarket “stuff” was a rarity where ingenuity truely played the major role…so, intending to build every kit in the stash was achievable…alas, as time goes by and progress would have it, resin and PE raised their uglier heads and being as ocd as i am…every new kit purchase had to be accessorized with all the new aftermarket nuance and what loose build schedule i was ever on became catch as catch can…
admittedly, my skills and attention to detail nurtured the growing penchant for “accuracy” thus slowing the average build time per kit to 6 to 8 months per…
the stash grew…the build time stretched out…and like some wise one here alluded to…it’s takes much less time to buy than it does to build…
one day i looked up and did the math…avg. time to build vs. avg. time remaining…
since i’ve now pared down my stash…i really do believe finishing everything …once again…is do-able…
my long winded answer to the original question is…i think so[%-)]
I have enough to keep me busy for a while. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t buy any more kits till I finished my stash. About a dozen vehicles and 6 or 7 figures of various scales.
I have a little over 300 kits not including aftermarket details and decals that I also have stock piled. This year has been finacially rough for me, so that stash has come in handy to while away the hours until new funding sources can be found (and I can start buying the rare/must haves/ and I wants again.)
Due to my current long-running unemployment, I have stopped buying kits for the most part. I have only bought one in over 9 months: the John C Stennis. Because of that, the stash of 293 unbuilt kits that I had at the beginning of 2004 is now down to about 143 with 5 in progress. Based on that, it is quite conceiveable that I could burn down my stash to nothing. Then I’ll pile on the ACE 1/72 scale armor kits and really drive myself nuts!
Jinithith2, I have almost 1000 built kits! I will by the end of the year!
