Not sure if you all saw this, from Reuters “A World War Two era German Dornier 17 bomber is seen using high-tech sonar equipment, showing it to be largely intact and well-preserved on the sea floor,in an undated photo off the Kent coast. A rare World War II German bomber shot down over the English Channel, hidden for years by shifting sands at the bottom of the sea, is so well preserved a British museum wants to raise it for its collection. The Dornier 17 warplane – thought to be world’s last known example – was hit on 26 August 1940 as it took part on a massive attack that became known as the Battle of Britain.”
They seriously need to bring this beast up!!. I love these type of stories. How many more aircraft are there like this off the cost all around the world.
well there are a whole ton in Lake Michigan alone and the Dutch did salvage a intact B-17 several years ago. But this wrecked Do-17z has to be raised with respect to the two crewmen whose remains are still inside the aircraft. And in Lake Superior there is a intact F-89 Scorpion fighter at the bottom of the lake.
This is not really “new” news, it just took some time to meander across the pond. This was in either an issue of Aeroplane or FlyPast, if not both, a couple months back. Additionally, an article in the magazine’s letter to the editor section the following month added to the story. It was used be divers/rescue divers as practice when it resurfaced many years back. The diver had entered the cockpit but had the bujezzus scared out of him when he thought what felt like a hand grabbed his leg. It was a fish or something and stated he found no evidence of any bodies remaining in the wreck.
